Hen3ry Largs Bay Sunset & Storm
10

Hi Henry & Others,

I have been following your sunrise quest in Rabaul with interest.  The other day I decided to take the dogs for an evening walk and missed a great sunset by a couple of minutes. I saw it developing but by the time I got my camera the best had passed. The following night I was prepared and ventured to the end of the street with GX8 GH4 tripod & 35-100 & 12-35 & waited

Initially nothing to speak of, then it slowly developed. An electrical storm front was also rolling in from across the Gulf so I was most fortunate to have the oportunity to capture both. The storm shots we long exposure experiments. I was pleased with results but I am sure the equipment in more experienced hands would do much better. Oh well I can only keep trying.

Please enjoy (all captured raw & straight out of camera via Lightroom)

Thanks for looking

Lew

starting to grow

This is going to be a good one

A classic ray pattern one to remember

Oh here comes the front

slowly developing large white light on left is a feighter on the anchorage

must be several miles out from the freighter but enough to make you tense if you were ship board

is this sheet lightening - green lines are the starbourd lights of small vessels zipping around

well these are all low resolution snaps just exported for email but I think they convey the mood.

I never seem to get it right if I try to post full size images.

Thanks Jacques, The full resolution pics are great, the files I loaded up just don't do the scenes justice. I love both the GX8 & GH4. I am still coming to grips with the GX8 set up. I had the direct focus area set to on wich locks the buttons up around the main menu button. For the life of me I could not remember how to return them to their basic functions. Most of the snaps were taken on the GH4 as it is so easy to select any function due to the direct input buttons.

I know what you mean by the uploaded pics not doing the images justice, I've noticed that when uploading to DPR my images also look pathetic, one needs to open them up to by clicking on them to get the larger display, but even then it doesn't look as it should.

Sounds like you're having fun with your cams - that's great - enjoy !

Really wish I'd gone there now. I saw the sunset developing and thought it would be a good one.

Re: Hen3ry says: What a ripper set!!! I am DRIPPING with envy!

As you say, classic rays, etc. -- and it always pays to wait through to the end. I got a "pleasant" sunset at Takubar Beach (Last) Resort near here several years ago, then believing all was over, went to the bar for a beer. While there I turned around and … buggerit!!! -- fantastic rays and stuff and it was just too late for me to get back to the camera, set up again, and capture it. A few days later, I benefited from the lesson learned!

The lightning -- now there is something I get no chance to do anything with here. We get HUGE thunder storms which roll right over the top of us, but the lightning display is about zilch -- it is all happening in heavy, low cloud.

You have some nice strikes there -- but did you see how Martin used his cunning Oly multi-exposure technique to get his multiple strikes into the same frame? Could we do something like that in Panny? If so, how?

The sunset AND the storm. Bad luck.

Re: Hen3ry Largs Bay Sunset & Storm

Thanks for the comments Dereck, Martin, Geoffrey and Paxo.

Martin, I used long exposure to catch the lightening, upto 60 seconds, to capture the lightening. Hence the blurring of the lights from the ships on the water. What techniques do you employ to capture your wonderful crisp shots?
