Canon SX710 HS

Please could I have some advice. I am off to see the northern lights can someone tell me what setting I should put the camera on to take the photos and also for the night time shots of stats etc . As you can guess I am a novice ! Thank you

I've not used that camera, Jacqui, but I've used many others. For shooting the aurora borealis I'd want a camera with a larger sensor capable of getting good results at higher ISOs, since those northern lights are not all that bright. And you will want to shoot a wide angle view.

For some general advice try Googling 'photographing northern lights' (without the quotes).  You'll find lots of useful advice that way.
