This is where I usually push the red dot button and stop down. Yes, I'm a vidiot.

I'm doing that too especially to catch the blowing and drifting snow in motion but Olympus video isn't that great.

I'm also shooting high speed video with a Fuji camera- but resolution is much lower with that.

Here is how to take snow photos. They are easily the best I have ever seen.

Scroll down to check out the Horse video.

Handheld with the new 300. Practically shouts "snow" to me.

Cheers,

So we have a Blizzard Watch up in Long Island for Saturday for up to 2 feet of snow and I was wondering what's the best way to capture snowflakes in flight when snow is falling at a very fast rate? We could have up to 4 inches per hour! In the past when I tried this, I would get disappointed and only see all the flakes blend into a white blur. I want to have a fast enough shutter speed to capture individual flakes as they fall and yet have the whole scene bright enough to see the background too. The good thing is the heaviest snow will be falling in the afternoon which is pretty rare- most of our snowstorms have the heaviest snow at night, so this will be during the brightest part of the day, great for photography!

This is the snow photo I took yesterday while arriving home after vacations: 1/30", but snow was falling slowly

... and just for information: a few hours earlier at Medano (Tenerife). Sigh...

Talk about a high dynamic range I wonder what you would get if you combined the two photos (in a creative way so you could see details of both.)

you mean, something like this?

Sigh... (10 hours later)

I love that- it looks like a portal into another world or just a thought bubble, reminiscing about your wonderful vacation during your long snowy trek home......

We ended up getting 30-34 inches here, got snowed in for 2 days.  Never seen anything like this before.

Nice grouping of birds there!

In addition to the cardinals, I see a junco, a couple of chickadees, some sort of brown wren or sparrow, and a woodpecker!  Nice !

How do you keep the squirrels away?

Re: Talk about dynamic range!

Indeed I did! I shall be posting them soon, I have to go through an entire 32 GB card I completely filled up! I also got some nice late night shots of icicles sparkling in moonlight and the stars of Orion, that was an added bonus way after the storm ended.

BTW if you want to see where I am located, I am near JFK airport in NYC (well just outside the city) and close to the Ocean, near the "6" in "30.6" in this picture

http://climate.rutgers.edu/stateclim/images/snow_20160122_20160124.png

We had 9 straight hours of blizzard conditions here at JFK (because of the heavy snowfall and high winds due to being right near the Ocean.)
