Travel tripod for E-M10 kmIi with Peak Design plate

I'm looking for a good travel tripod to use with the Peak Design standard plate that comes with Capture. I'm used to the gorillapod with magnets for my Panasonic TZ40 travel camera. Now I need a portable tripod for my E-M10 mkII with the Peak Design clip and the 12-40 2.8 pro lens/75-300 II lens.

Since I will only get value from a tripod when I bring it on a trip, I'm looking for the smallest, most lightweight tripod that fits the standard plate from Peak Design. I'm am eager to read your experiences and recommendations.

Thanks

Isn't that supposed to be ARCA compatible? Assuming so, that ought to make most of the travel tripods directly compatible. There have been a bunch of discussions about travel tripods already, but to get you started look at the MeFoto line such as the Backpacker or Daytripper, also look at Sirui T-005x or T-004x (or T-025x or T-024x for carbon fiber).  There are tradeoffs between the different models that you'll need to asses against your needs/preferences to identify the best unit for you.

Suggest you ask for tripod and head advice over in the Accessories forum. First read through some of the many threads there of people asking similar questions, then ask your questions along with some additional information such as your price range, what types of photography, any other helpful information.

The old saying is "pick any 2 of these: low cost, stability, and portability". However, I would add to that what levels of build quality, reliability, and which user features are you expecting (of course these last 3 affect the first 3).

Cheers,
Dennis.

I'll be interested in the responses you get.

I'm looking for a light weight compact tripod that will pack easily for travel & hiking.  Strongly leaning to the Sirui T-005 with the MePhoto Backpacker running a close second.  If you want something similar for half the price you might want to look at the Amazon Basics 52" carbon fiber Travel Tripod

Yes, it is ARCA compatible. But according to Peak Design ARCA it not an actual standard so every manufacturer makes small difference, so one cannot be sure it will fit (well). Thanks for the suggestions!

Thanks Dennis. I will look at the Accessories forum.

For the time being I will choose portability, cost and ARCA/Peak Design plate compatibility.

*edit*: Speed! I value speed of the setup very much, hence the wish for the plate compatibility. I do not have patience to spend more thime than needed in taking a slightly better picture, I prefer to maximize time exploring and experience foreign places and cultures */edit*

In the long run I would probably value portability, stability and reliability for maximum picture quality.

Thanks!

Well, I don't know what would Peak design mean on ARCA not being a standard. If is ARCA compatible, it should fit all ARCA heads and plates.

Anyhow, I also have Peak Design plates, as well as ARCA compatible L brackets on all my cameras, and they all fit my two ARCA compatible tripods. I have the PD plate attached to my HLD-7 battery grip. I use a 2 tripod approach, a sturdy MeFOTO globetrotter for whenever I can reach with my car, and a 3 legged thing Punks Rick for everything else. Both are carbon fiber. The Punks Rich is so small, it will easily fit on a daily shoulder bag, or even a small backpack. I can make it fit on my LowePro Photo Hatchback 22L water bottle mesh pocket. Is a tight fit, though.

I've been using both for well over a year, and they are like the day I got them. Very highly recommended.

Triopo + Peak Design

I have the Peak Design plate and still use it on some occasions (I now mainly use the L Plate for my Olympus bodies)

I 've gone through this route before and opted for a Sirui T005X but after using it for a while I found it on the flimsy side as it tends to sway in the wind (even slight)

I ended up selling it and looked for a more stable but still portable tripod

The result:

Triopo carbon GT-25L and N-1 ball head

The peak design plate would fit the ball head fine

This serves as my hiking and travel tripod

I have another stronger still Triopo + Photo Clam head but this setup would only be used for shorter treks and 'parking' shooting

Also follow this thread I wrote earlier

Hope this helps
