Update on E-PL6

Hi, first I wanted to take time to thank Guy and Helen for helping me with my camera and its menus- you were both a great help and I got most everything sorted out- including the touch screen menu thing. It's actually pretty hard for me to get that button to work, I pressed it several times but it didn't work, but it does work when I slide my finger across it (swipe?)- well it works sometimes and other times it doesn't. But at least it works and I have it set to focus only. I also saw the focus point magnification scale on the right which is what Helen was talking about (I think) when she mentioned changing the size of the focus point? It goes up to 14x.

Thanks to Guy I also got the level gauge to work properly and can finally see both horizontal and vertical scales on the edges of the screen. I switched single AE/AF to mode 2, so for the single/continuous/manual combo I have 2-2-1.

Thanks to Helen I was able to program all the function buttons, I just added one new one we didn't talk about before, L-Fn and set it to 2x digital converter. Does this mean I have to press two buttons to toggle that feature on/off? I set the right arrow key to ISO and the bottom arrow key to EC. Since manual mode doesn't have EC I wonder what that will do in manual mode? One thing I forgot to ask is how many custom white balance settings can I save in the camera? 5? (one for each MyMode plus the main setting.)

While most everything has been sorted out, the one thing I still haven't been able to do is update the firmware I tried everything, USB set to Auto, USB set to Mass, inside Olympus Viewer, outside of it, you name it. I noticed in OV3 the camera is connected to the program and the computer but as soon as it downloads the update the connection is broken. I wonder why this happens? Anyway since it's a very minor update I wont bother with it anymore (I wasted a whole battery charge on tweaking settings and trying to update that firmware plus taking just a couple of test photos to test IS and high ISO!)

Re: Update on E-PL6

Are you using the Olympus Updater program?  Try that instead of Viewer.  I think you meant the former perhaps?

Thanks, I tried both but the results were the same

At least with the E-M1 my procedure is as follows,

-  start Olympus updater on my computer

-  connect the camera to the computer with a usb cable

-  select Storage on camera (unless you have it already set to always select storage in camera menus)

- the program then recognizes that the camera's been plugged in and you press next (or something like that) on the Olympus Updater screen.  Then follow the instructions.  Don't touch or unplug the camera unless the update is fully done.

Thanks, I did it with OV3 and turned the program on, then connected the camera to the computer, the program recognized I had the camera connected and listed it as E-PL6 and even loaded the images (if I had a card inside the camera).

I did different variations of it, like plugging the camera before or after I ran the program, with or without the memory card, with either AUTO selected for USB or Mass Storage (if AUTO was selected I just chose Mass Storage when I plugged the camera in)- but no matter which variation I did, the result was the same- the camera was selected as detected and it told me I had a new firmware to install that is 41 mb and as soon as the pct reached 100% the camera was disconnected an I had that error message about a sharing violation in the temp bin file and as soon as I x out of it the camera is detected again and wash, rinse and repeat lol.

Re: Update on E-PL6

Hmm.  Can you format the SD card in camera and try again?  This sharing violation thing should be investigated.  I'd stick with Olympus Updater for now, but I think there is a way to update from SD card too.

I would love to do it with an SD card- I'm used to updating firmware that way!  I just formatted a second SD card.  How do you download the update to the card?

Re: Update on E-PL6

Actually can you try the Olympus Updater with SD card removed from the camera first? Just noticed Olympus specifies that

http://www.olympusamerica.com/cpg_section/cpg_downloads_updater_info.asp

If that still doesn't work, you can google updating olympus firmware from SD card, there are guides.  It is not the official method and is not recommended by Olympus, but it works if you can find the proper firmware file.

Re: Update on E-PL6

I a bit confused did you try both modes? I used to bring in files to OV3 via MTP Mass Transfer Protocol with windows7 but Windows 10 requires importing to be done in storage mode. I believe to upgrade the camera it always had to be in storage mode.

Thanks, I am going to try both of those!  It's bound to work sooner or later lol.  I just wish I knew what was wrong.

So setting the USB to AUTO in the menu and then manually selecting storage mode when plugging the camera into the computer did not work? I tried both.
