Wow!

I am very impressed with how sharp these are -- especially given that you did these hand held. You must be one steady guy.

The 100-300mm and Oly E-M5 mkll did a great job of resolving some fine detail -- of course with your assistance.

Very nice images.

Oh yeah, they are sharp !! Beautiful little birds.

Excellent distance with that lens obviously. Tack sharp, amazingly so at the larger sizes, with beautiful fine feathering details and also love the colours in these little ones. Nice work behind it as well.

All the best and fantastic sharp shots !!. Impressive details.

Danny.

Very nice!  We have more White-breasted Nuthatches around here and it is always nice to see the Red-breasted variety.

Great shots of those little buggers.

And good use of selective sharpening. You avoided the dreaded graininess and halos around the edges. It's still a bit too excessive for my taste, but works very well to emphasise detail on the birds. The final result is much better than the usual "sharpen everything" approach.

And man, even at f/6.3, DOF is extremely shallow at those distances, impressive that you got focus where you wanted. I bet all of those photos could easily be shot at f/11 and DOF would still be very shallow.

Very well done.  I hear complaints about the 100-300 at 300mm not being sharp.  These look very sharp to me.  It demonstrates that the lens does very well if focused correctly.

Thank you all for your kind comments

The aspect that surprised me is the very shallow depth of field even if it's MFT sensor, but think about it this is also due to the focal length used

Lovely pictures of a bird I enjoy seeing.  Fine detail on the subject, quiet, pleasing background.  Nuthatches are small birds so you dd well to get yourself into such a good position.

I noted the f6.3 setting.  Worked very well for your shots in spite of the pundits here saying that you must use f7.1 with the 100-300 lens.

Nice photos well detailed on a bird that fidgets a lot ,surprised that it was that sharp at 300mm my version was not ,starting long for a good tele lens soon I hope.

Another great photo. Question - did you use the electronic shutter?

Yes, I have the same combo as the OP, and I find the 100-300 is much better than its reputation, at all lengths.

I encourage anyone dithering to buy and try, based on my experience. I spent too much time on the internet first, and nearly ruined it for me.

Maybe it demonstrates that the lens does very well if there is no shutter shock involved?

Shutter shock is the biggest challenge with my 100-300.  I always shoot in bursts to increase my chances of a sharp image.  This is also why I ordered the 300mm f4 over the 100-400mm.

I don't follow your logic?

With a faster lens I can increase my shutter speed which reduces the risk of shutter shock.
