Only the D7 can. The 2 later models included a "hot Mirror" and this causes the IR photos to have a big, washed out area in the center of the photos.

See my web site for examples of IR with the D7. Look in landscapes and in Architecture.

Has anyone actually tried with the 7i or 7Hi?

I have an IR filter I had used with my D5 however it hasn't been warm enough to try the filter on my 7Hi. I've read about the IR filters on the newer models but don't want to give up hope until I try it for myself.

Hope it stops raining soon....

I have seen examples... the washed out area in the center is most unattractive.

I suspect, given some heavy PhotoShop editing, one could salvage the center area washout, but it would be a trial and error thing.

Michael, please try soon. I was considering IR filter (Hoya).

A-ah, too bad! I was seriously considering to get IR filter. It will be better to see 7Hi examples (I have 7Hi, cracked of course), but probably they will be the same.
Thanks, Melanie.

From what I understand, IR light can cause colors to be slightly off ( such as a person's black clothing looking a little green or brown in your photo ) The hot mirror is designed to filter out the IR that causes this to happen.

A-ha, I recall now - somebody mentioned it here. Thanks again Melanie.

But I still think it will not be the worst idea to spend 20-30$ for that IR filter - looks interesting and I have 0 experience with IR.

InfraRed Examples -- Dimage 7Hi & Dimage 5

Okay... it stopped raining just long enough for me to venture outside and snap a few IR shots. Granted, a rainy January day on Vancouver Island is not the best for infrared shots, however here goes...

Above is the thumbnail from my Dimage 7Hi with the IR filter in place...

Same shot, with desaturation done using Photshop

This was a similar shot last summer using a Dimage 5. Again, raw from the camera, resized to match above.

The image, similar desaturation applied.

The filter is a Rodenstock RG715 E49 InfraRed filter. I dropped the image size to keep download times reasonable for these forum pages. I could email zipped images if requested.

The D5 shots remained reasonably crisp and clear across the image. The D7Hi, well...theres that halo in the middle. After desaturation, it starts to go away but the shot is nowhere near as crisp.

Bottom line, my RG715 is about to go on eBay. The Dimage 7Hi is not suitable for IR photography. Pity...

this photo was taken by Philipe Rodrigez, his infrared portefolio is impressive. no..very impressive. It's that photo that decided me to buy the D7. Here is his full gallery:
