Might be the 24 STM that I don't yet have.  Ran around with the 35 2.0 IS today and it was slightly too long much of the time.

Might do a 1-2 of the 24 and 50 STM (for travel/street).

I agree. I experimented today with one of my zooms and I think 35 would be too restrictive for my style.  I think 24 at the widest, maybe as high as 30.

Hands down it's the 24 EFS 2.8 lens.  That is a great focal length, the lens is very small and light.  And the lens is very sharp.  I'm using it a lot for events.  I have used the 17-55 2.8 for several years, and really like almost everything about the lens except two really big issues.  The first is weight, it's a killer and the second is the lens creep so shooting with one hand while holding flash up with the other is very difficult, and the focal length keeps changing on you.  I find that the 24 is the sweet spot for many even type pictures when I looked at where I ended up with the 17-55, so having this simple, light lens that doesn't move is really nice.

The 24.mm stm is a nice lens and small!

Re: If you could only take one prime for your apsc/crop?

Thanks everyone for your input. I am ordering a 24mm STM to experiment with. If it turns out that I feel limited in low light or it feels a bit too wide, I'll consider whether I want to go for a prime in 24, 28 or 30 and sacrifice additional weight/size.  Reading the reviews and knowing the size of the 24mm STM, I am fairly certain I'll hang onto this lens regardless as it seems like a bargain and a real gem!

The fl I use the most on full frame is 50mm but sometimes a bit wider wouldn't hurt, so my choice on aps-c would be the 24mm stm. In your gear list you already have the 85mm f1.8, if you add the 50mm stm you'd have:

40~mm f2.8

80mm f1.8

135mm f1.8

All in a really small and light package. If you just carry with you the 24 and 50 it will be hard to tell that you have 2 lenses with you, due to the small size and weight.

Yes and the 40mm pancake is equally as much of a steal. They make a great pair.

A good place to start - have fun and let us know how you find it.

To add my two cents/experience to this discussion for future reference; My EF 28mm f/1.8 is the default lens attached to my 70D and it's a very all-round useful FL - not too wide or too long - generally speaking. Indoors it's wide enough to get most things in and outside too for some architecture at medium distances. It's not too long either like my 50mm that i had to sell on for this reason. But a couple of times i did feel a little bit longer length would've been nice when i was in a wide-open space with crowds - i recently tried the EF 35mm f/2 IS indoors and found that in even in close quarters i could just about deal with the FL so i would really like to try it outdoors and the IS would be handy when travelling about as well as the f/2 in low-light and size + weight, i think this would be my next choice of prime if i have the money spare - i would not buy any prime with a longer FL than this for mid-range photography (telephoto/macro is a different case of course!).

Just to note that although the 28 1.8 is soft wide open, to have the ability to let in all that light is very useful, and besides if you're shooting at high ISO the image quality won't really be that fantastic anyway - but you'll be able to see the subject better than at f/2.8 at the same shutter speed. I brought mine before the 24mm STM was released else i most likely would've gone for it too due to it's size & price, but i'm glad to know the ability to go wider with the aperture

Re: If you could only take one prime for your apsc/crop?

If I had to take only one it would be the EF 24mm f2.8 IS USM. This lens is still compact with a 58 mm filter and the IS allows for higher DOF or lower shutter speeds than would be achievable with the 24mm STM.

If I could have a few, they would be the 24mm STM, 24mm pancake, 50mm STM, and 85mm f1.8. Nice compact kit with an SL1.

For minimum size and cost, I would take the 24mm STM and 40mm or 50mm STM with an SL1 body.

It would be nice if Canon fitted the SL1 with in-body stabilization to take advantage of the pancakes/primes, but I am very enthusiastic about the IS on the regular 24, 28 and 35mm primes. They are brilliant. Keep it up Canon!

We need a 50mm f1.4 IS and 85mm f1.8 IS. Either both with 67mm filter threads to match the 35mm f2 IS, or perhaps better make the 50mm with a 58mm filter to match the 24mm (if the image quality doesn't suffer), and the 85mm with 67mm threads to match the 35mm f2 IS.
