action shots

Hello I would like to take some clear action shots using the wifes canon 1000d. I followed a guide on the web best I could and took a couple of shots today just scenery but they are very dark

The camera is set on tv

The action I would like to capture would be very fast as in a grey hound type speed

I have included this info but it doesn't mean much to me. I appreciate its a complex thing and I need to experiment but any pointers welcome Thank you

Look on the top of the camera

Photography is a lot more complicated than Canon ads would have you believe.

But, that said...

Look on the top of the camera, for a round knob with lots of letters on it. Your message says it is (or was) set at TV.

Turn it to the sports icon, which looks sort of like a runner.

This will automatically change a lot of settings, to improve sports pictures.

But, that said, photography of fast moving things, including running dogs, needs lots of light, so you can pretty much forget about high quality pictures of fast moving subjects on rainy, cloudy, seriously overcast days.

Re: action shots

I assume your camera operates in a similar fashion as my Canon T2i/T3i (550D/600D) cameras with the following explanation. If you set the shutter speed too fast for the given ISO setting and aperture, then it will show up too dark. This is something that can be worse on dark cloudy days than if you had bright sunlight. You either need to purchase a camera that will provide higher ISO settings like the Canon T6i (760D) camera and/or use a lens that will permit you to use lower F-stops such as F2.8 to allow in more light. Or just plan to take photos for fast action on sunny days.

So to get it to not show up as a dark picture, keep reducing the shutter speed (with the ISO level and aperture you chose) until you get the correct exposure. Look at the histogram to help you with this.  Or you can start in Av (aperture priority) mode with the chosen ISO level and aperture and the camera will pick the shutter speed that will properly expose the photo. It also depends on what exposure mode you picked.

If you use a F-stop like F2.8 the depth of field will be more shallow than if the lens is stopped down from there, with all other things being equal. If any of these technical terms are not understood please review on the internet. YouTube has some great information also.
