Anyone shoot square format?

Just curious if anyone else shoots with the square format jpeg setting?  I decided to try it out lately On my NX300 and it's been fun playing around with composition, reminds me of shooting with my Rolleiflex TLR, however I'm sure it was probably intended to be more instagram friendly.  I really wish Samsung had given the option of shooting 4:3 format since I always end up cropping to that anyhow if I print, but meh, can't have it all.  Just curious if anyone else did this on a regular basis.

I shoot often in the square format and, as you thought, it's mostly because of Instagram. I've noticed, though, that despite Instagram allowing other aspect ratios now, I've grown to like the square format for itself, too. But for my more "serious" work, I still go for 3:2. I agree with you on the 4:3 option. I think it's my favourite aspect ratio.

Yes and no. I would never shoot JPEG so I don't use the in-camera square setting but I'm working on a series of images cropped/printed square.

Re: Anyone shoot square format?

I typically will switch to jpeg+raw if I anticipate I might want have more to work with for pp, usually trips and things of that nature, but for snapshots around the house I've been seeing the camera for jpeg only, I don't need a raw file of a garden trellis I built and took a picture of to show my brother, for example. I haven't tried it yet but when set to jpeg+raw will the camera capture the full 3:2 shot for the raw even if set on the square format?

As far frame aspects, I can't understand the omission of 4:3 (a classic ratio for decades) and yet the inclusion of 16:9, which I just can't warm up to at all.

RAW is not cropped in JPEG + RAW.  The other thing you will notice is the RAW usually needs some exposure adjustment to match the JPEG, it will probably be darker.

I shoot square a lot, but just crop in post.

16x9 makes perfect sense: wide screen TV format. No one prints these days...post on the web, view on the TV.
