how to set aperture on e-pm2 with legacy glass

Hi, sorry for a noob question. I just got a hand on an e-pm2 and couldn't figure out how to set the aperture on non m4/3 lense (in A and M mode). I have no problem with m4/3 lense but when I put on the the adapter the aperture display "--" and I can't change it. Is there something I have to turn on or off ?

thanks,

Set the camera to S or M

You adjust the aperture on the lens - if it has an Aperture ring.

If it does not, you cannot adjust the aperture unless the adaptor has some kind of adjustment.

E.G. Old Nikon lenses have a ring but almost all of the new lenses do not. Therefore, one buys the appropriate adaptor.

You change it on the lens, and realize there's no communication between body & lens so naturally the aperture setting in the display has nothing to show.

IOW, that's normal.

Re: how to set aperture on e-pm2 with legacy glass

Found it ! (the "ring" on the adapter) It marked Lock <---> Open, so I thought it lock the adapter to the camera...

Once again thanks...

Re: how to set aperture on e-pm2 with legacy glass

If you are using an older, manual everything lens, set the aperture (and focus) on the lens using the aperture and focus rings. If you are using an auto focus lens, some of the cheap adapters have an "open - lock" function. Do not assume the "lock" part has anything to do with attaching the adapter to your camera - It doesn't (It should read "open - close," but something gets lost in the translation.) Attach the adapter to your camera as you would a lens w/o an adapter. You will also have to focus manually.

I do not have your camera, but do have an E-PM-1. I used it today with a Fotasy brand adapter and a sony auto focus lens. Put the adapter on the lens in the "open" position. You can then adjust the aperture using the "open-lock/close" ring on the adapter. There are no aperture markings on the adapter, but you can figure out what you want by watching live view.

Whatever aperture you set, the camera will adjust the shutter speed for you if you shoot in Aperture Priority. If you want to be more creative, shoot in Manual, and adjust both the aperture and shutter speed, with the ISO set to Auto.

Don't forget to set the camera to "Shoot Without Lens" in the set up menu, since the adapter has no electrical connections, the camera won't recognize there is even a lens attached if you don't do that. Happy shooting!

Peace.

John

Use the aperture ring on the lens?

Thats one of the joys and beauties of using manual lenses. Direct control and simplicity!

Thank John, I though the ring has some numbers (1.8, 2.8...) not Lock<--> Open !

That "shoot without lens" menu thing is only with Panasonic bodies.

Olympus happily just works with or without lenses of any type with no menu fiddles needed.

Activate Shoot Without Lens ONCE and forget it. That's rough.

That is the aperture ring that everybody has been talking about. If those numbers are unfamiliar maybe you need to do some basic learning.

Try Cambridge in Colour

About half way down this page

http://www.cambridgeincolour.com/tutorials/camera-exposure.htm

you'll find a simple explanation about aperture and the whole page explains how aperture, exposure time (shutter speed) and ISO work together.

It's rough that you even need to do it all.

There really seems to be no point at all in having that Panasonic menu item. Not trying to be a smartie, just really curious why they included it.

You're right. It's kind of pointless having it, since there's no need to ever disable it, even if you never use manual or adapted lenses.

Fujis have exactly the same menu item. I haven't worked out why.

Re: how to set aperture on e-pm2 with legacy glass

It's pretty much essential to know if your lens has an aperture control ring on it and where the arperture is set. Wide open half way or closed. As far as I know the adapters with the arperture control can't change the setting in the lens so if your lens was set to closed it can't open it. It can only limit the amount of light getting to the sensor from the lens. My lens has the control ring on it so it's not a problem for me.

Re: how to set aperture on e-pm2 with legacy glass

Anyway I'm not sure if you just got the camera and if the SCP super control panel, or secret control panel depending on your point of view is on. If it is go to the bottom right cell and select IS. Hit the info button and set the focal length of your lens. 50mm. This tells the camera how to respond to image shake on you adapted lens. I have the same camera and I assign image magnify to one of the two programmable function buttons. That way if I want to critically check focus I can just press the button to get a magnified view.

You're right. It's kind of pointless having it, since there's no need to ever disable it, even if you never use manual or adapted lenses.

I've heard a couple explanations for this.

1: it protects the shutter from firing when there's a possibility of an obstruction being in the way.

2: It's a health check. If you don't have "shoot without lens" enabled, if something goes wrong with the communication between the body and the lens - there's something wrong with the lens, lens isn't properly seated etc. you are notified vs. just getting weirdness.

While I enjoy shooting with adapted lenses it is a bit of a weird situation. I would guess that 99% of m43 bodies sold will never see a non-native lens attached. It makes total sense for the camera to point out that something's wrong when no lens is attached.
