Copying RAW/JPEGs from Fuji X cameras to Galaxy Tab S or Note 4 questions?

I have a Fuji X-E2, a Galaxy Tab S, and a Galaxy Note 4. I am leaving for a month long vacation in six weeks. I know that I can use Fuji's wireless app to copy images from my X-E2 to either Samsung device but that can be a slow process and it only transfers JPEGs. When I had my old iPad, I used the Apple camera connection kit that had two pieces; one piece is a USB port with an Apple connector that allowed me to use my camera's USB cable for a direct connection and the other is an SD card reader with the Apple connector. Using either one, immediately transferred any new RAW and JPEG files to the iPad. I'm looking to find something that will work the same way with my Tab S or Note 4.

I have a USB female to microUSB male connector. I tried connecting my X-E2 to the Tab S but there was no auto file download and I couldn't find which app to use to talk to the camera. The Fuji remote app only works with a wireless connection. I can also get a card reader with a microUSB connector but don't know if it will work either.

Does anyone know if I can do this and what apps I might need to use?

Re: Copying RAW/JPEGs from Fuji X cameras to Galaxy Tab S or Note 4 questions?

Have you tried using a file manager app on your devices, like ES or Total Commander to see if it will recognise the camera as an external drive? If they don't, a card reader should be seen but may need drivers.

Do the devices work with OTG cables? Do a search for your devices & OTG. If so, you can get an OTG cable & a tiny Micro SD card/USB adapter (I bought some Sandisk cards from Costco that came with both adapter types, one for camera & one to USB).

Then use use a micro SD card with card adapter in the camera, then remove the micro SD card from camera & plug it into the very small USB adapter, then into the OTG cable, then into your tablet device micro USB connection. A good file manager app should see the Micro SD card & be able to copy or move the files to your device. AFAIK, OTG cables / devices, will only read FAT32 formatted cards. A bit clumsy but pretty fast via cable / card transfers vs. Wifi & if your devices allow OTG cables, it can work & file manager apps are simple.

This is the method that I use when traveling.  You do need the OTG cable.  I copy my pictures to my 128 GIG microSD card.  I then copy them from a microSD to an external flash drive.  As Cariboo has said, it is a bit of a kluge but considering that the table only has one connector, that is you only option.

Re: Copying RAW/JPEGs from Fuji X cameras to Galaxy Tab S or Note 4 questions?

By micro SD to USB "adapter", I meant "reader". Sandisk calls it a reader.

See here:

http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_c_0_23?url=search-alias%3Delectronics&field-keywords=sandisk+micro+sd+reader&sprefix=sandisk+micro+sd+reader%2Caps%2C302

I bought all 3 as a "kit" from Costco but Amazon has them too.

I use an OTG cable like one of these, under $5

http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_2?url=search-alias%3Delectronics&field-keywords=OTG+cable&rh=n%3A172282%2Ck%3AOTG+cable

You just have to find out if your tablet or phone support OTG, not all do. The Micro SD cards are formatted as FAT32 which is why they can be read by devices like phones or tablets via OTG.

To do file transfers like copy or move, I use ES or Total Commander file managers & QuickPic gallery app v3.491 (doesn't use cloud interface nor want to update to the latest versions which are not as good?).

I actually have a StarTech OTG cable that I bought from B&H Photo. This is what I tried to use with my Galaxy Tab S the other day to connect my X-E2. So, I went online as suggested and searched on "Galaxy Tab S and OTG" plus "Galaxy Note 4 and OTG". I actually found several YouTube videos on how to use the OTG connector with each device. But I'm not getting the icon that they all show coming up on the Tab S or Note 4when an OTC device is connected. They also showed a PNY jump drive connected to the OTC cable and were using the file manager that comes from Samsung to move files back and forth. I have the same jump drive and connected it but the file manager did not show it. So either the OTC functionality was removed when both devices went to the latest Android operating system, 5.1.1, or I have to turn on something in setup that I have not found yet. I will chase that down with Samsung.

About the microSD cards. Why only micro SD cards? I actually have several Sandisk 32GB microSD cards that I bought when I owned a Nikon 1 V3 and I have a 64GB microSD card in each of my Samsung devices. In my X-E2 I use Sandisk 32GB Extreme SDHC cards and I saw this card reader at B&H Photo that has a microUSB connector and reads a number of different types of cards. Wouldn't it work just as well.

Having not much else to do, I talked to Samsung tech support and both my Galaxy Tab S and Galaxy Note 4 are OTG compatible and I should immediately see the connector listed in the storage info in the setup app and also in their file manager. So it looks like the problem may be with the OTG connector I got from B&H. They also told me that I can use any card reader with a microUSB male connector or any USB card reader through the OTG connection. They said I can also use SD, SDHC, and SDXC cards; doesn't have to be microSD.

So as soon as the Christmas madness is over, I'm heading to BestBuy for a new OTG connector and to see what they have in card readers. Thanks to the both of you for your help and advice.

You probably know this already now, but both the Note 4 and Tab S are OTG compatible as I own both too. I currently using the OTG cable that came with my Nokia N8 years ago! It does seem to be sensitive to which cable you're using - I've had several experiences of it not connecting properly or disconnecting too easily - in my case this was down to the micro usb cable and not the OTG adapter.

Re: Copying RAW/JPEGs from Fuji X cameras to Galaxy Tab S or Note 4 questions?

Hope you get it solved with just a new cable. I've had good luck with 90 deg plug as staying wobble free. I wish they were more common.

FWIW I referred just to micro SD cards as that was my only experience with readers with micro USB plugs. My other multi card readers are also quite large so I was looking for smaller solutions, which the tiny Sandisk SD card reader solves. Let us know if it works so future searches have a solution?

I did notice something today. The microUSB plug on the Startech OTG connector is slightly longer and looks bigger than the plug on my Samsung Charger cable and it sticks out when connected to the Note 4 or the Tab S. It may not be making proper contact. I also verified that the 8GB jumpdrive I have works fine so it's definitely something with the OTG connector.

Re: Copying RAW/JPEGs from Fuji X cameras to Galaxy Tab S or Note 4 questions?

I have a Tab S2 and Note4. I bought a Samsung OTG at Best Buy when I bought the tablet. I connect my usual card reader (Lexar) to the OTG, and then I can read and download from any card on my tablet or phone.

My goal for this set up was to provide ability to view photos, including RAW files, and to create backups while traveling. I added a 128GB micro chip to the tablet so it could hold lots of images. After copying my photos to the tablet, I copy from the tablet to a thumb drive, using the same OTG cable, in order to have a second backup. I experimented with several file managers to find the one easiest to work with. I had hoped to copy from the tablet to an external hard drive but found that wouldn't work. I was amazed at how fast the files downloaded to the tablet. It enabled me to create daily backups and even do some basic editing of the jpegs.

I also bought a $9 IOGEAR OTG, that was recommended on these forums, that has a built in card slot as well as three USB ports. It works well too, although the download is maybe not as fast. Using it, one can download from the card directly to a thumb drive without storing on the tablet first.

Thanks for the tip. I'll have to look at that IOGear OTG. I plan to replace the OTG I bought with the Samsung OTG and I have been looking at a Bidul & Company 4-in-1 card reader that B&H Photo sells for $18.95. It has a male microUSB connector to plug right into any Android Smartphone or Tablet and on the back side it has an OTG USB A port, SD card reader, microSD card reader, a female microSD port and has status indicators for power and data transfer. But I don't think it will transfer directly from a card to a jump drive or an HDD. I was thinking about one of the small portable hard drives as a final backup on the road but then I found that Samsung makes a 128GB jumpdrive with a micro usb connector on one end and a USB 3.0'2.0 connector on the other end. At $39 it's less than the cost of a good portable HDD or SSD and you dont need any cables or power supply.

Re: Copying RAW/JPEGs from Fuji X cameras to Galaxy Tab S or Note 4 questions?

After extensive research, I determined that Android did not play well with external hard drives. I tried and although the tablet could see the external drive it couldn't write to it.  Something about the language used. So I went to thumb drives, which worked well for travel because of small size. I also did not overwrite my cards during the trip, so I had three copies of everything. I was fearful this setup would be slow, but was pleased with the speed.  I was on a ship in Antarctica, and using the thumb drives, was able to do light editing, such as cropping, adjusting exposure etc., and then share with others on the trip. The most frustrating part was learning to navigate the file manager app.....coming from a windows background.

Re: Copying RAW/JPEGs from Fuji X cameras to Galaxy Tab S or Note 4 questions?

For more on this see a long thread titled "Camera or card to tablet, possible?"  The file manager I ultimately used the most is called ES File Explorer.  It allowed me to easily select a subset of the images on a card for copying, if I had previously copied some of them. I liked the interface of FX better but never figured out how to easily copy just a portion of the files. The My Files app that comes on the tablet isn't bad either.

I have the standard android My Files file manager, which is actually pretty good, and one called OI File Manager that a lot of people recommended. I don't like that one all that much. Problem with hard drives  is that Windows uses one format and Mac another. Plus you have Fat32 which is an older standard that everyone should recognize including Android devices, but reality is not always the same. I can get a 128GB Samsung jumpdrive for $40, a 256GB Samsung pocket sized SSD drive for $100, or 1TB and up pocket sized HDD drives from $60 to $100. Since I can't imagine needing more than $128GB and the Samsung has both a microUSB and USB 3.0 connecter, it sounds like the winner.

I will be interested to hear if you sucessfully copy to the external drive, and if so which drive you use.  Do you mean that your Galaxy tab has a full size usb connection slot, in addition to the micro usb connection?

No, the Tab S and Note 4 have a MicroUSB connection slot only. But Samsung makes an OTG connector cable. One end has a male MicroUSB connector to plug into the Note 4 or Tab S and the other end has a female USB 3.0/2.0 connector so you can connect USB devices. I have a Startech OTG connector and it doesn't work, so I'm assuming it's defective. Sometimes you get what you pay for. I'm also looking at a MicroUSB card reader that is designed to work with Android devices. It reads SD and MicroSD cards, Has a USB 3.0/2.0 OTG port, and a female MicroUSB but I don't know why you want to use that.

I've come down to three external drives that should allow me to copy any files from the Note 4 or Tab S. and also talk to my iMac when I get home.

  1. Samsung 128GB jumpdrive with a MicroUSB connector at one end and a USB 3.0/2.0 connector at the other. $40.
  2. Samsung 256GB SSD USB 3.0/2.0. $100
  3. Transcend or Seagate 1TB HDD USB 3.0/2.0 $55/$60

The SSD and both HDDs are about the size of a playing card and around a half inch thick. Any of them would give me more than enough storage memory for my trip. My only concern about the jumpdrive is that it is so small, it would be easy to lose and I've done that before. When I get everything in, I'll gladly post the results.

Re: Copying RAW/JPEGs from Fuji X cameras to Galaxy Tab S or Note 4 Answer

I bought three devices from B&H Photo. and can now copy RAW and JPEG files from my Fuji X-E2 to my Galaxy Note 4 or Galaxy Tab S or transfer the files between storage devices easily. My Galaxy Note 4 is on Android Version 5.1.1 and my Galaxy Tab is on Android Version 5.0.2.

  1. Samsung USB Adapter (11 Pin) White: This is Samsung's OTG connector. I connected the X-E2 to both Samsung Devices. The Gallery App opened and all JPEGs in the camera were shown. They had to be selected and imported.
  2. Samsung USB 3.0 128GB Duo Flash Drive. This is a 128GB jump drive that has a MicroUSB connector at one end and a USB 3.0/2.0 at the other end. It comes with a cover for the MicroUSB connector. When plugged into either Android device, the MyFiles file manager opens and the jump drive is listed as USB Storage A. Any files can be copied, moved, or deleted between the jump drive and either Android device. Also connected the jump drive to one of the USB ports on my iMac and it appears on the desktop as another external drive. This flash drive is about two-thirds the length of my pinky so, I am concerned about losing it.
  3. Bidul 4IN1 Connection Kit for Samsung Galaxy. This little device has a MicroUSB connector to connect to a Galaxy smartphone or tablet. On the other side it has an SD card reader, MicroSD card reader, USB 3.0/2.0 port, and a microUSB port. I tested it on the Note 4 and Tab S using both card readers and also put the MicroSD card in the SD adapter it came with and tested that scenario also. I also verified that USB 3.0/2.0 port, basically an OTG connection, and the MicroUSB ports work also with either Galaxy device. Once Connected the SD card or device is shown in the file manager as USB device A and you can move, copy, or delete files between the SD card or USB device and the Galaxy device as you wish, including RAW files,  There are only two caveats; the Micro USB connector would not connect to my Galaxy Note 4 until I took the Note 4 out of the Samsung rubb er case it is in and you cannot connect to more than one device at a time.
