EOS 300D Rebel issues...

Hi everybody..

My grandmother just sent me a digital camera she has laying around her house, an Cannon Eos Digital Rebel 300D. She admited it's been laying around for a few years, so she thought I'd use it better, which I plan to. I flipped the switch on, and took a couple test photos, then I was checking out the batteries and stuff and popped out the memory card. I popped it back in and got "error 02" which according to the manual is a memory card error, so I popped in a brand new out of the box card I had around. Now, the LCD screen says simply "EOS" and freezes there. It can't take pictures and only turns off when I remove the battery, flipping the on/off switch doesn't do anything it just stays on the "EOS" display... my only theory is maybe it's the batteries that have been laying around? I've charged them all and tried again, but it didn't work.. '

Any help is appreciated, and thank you in advance.

Check that the CF card pins in the memory card slot are not damaged.  If they are bent/broken, it may not be economical to have it repaired unless you can DIY.

Otherwise,

The main BP511/BP512 battery probably needs replacing. They age and go bad after a few years even without use. The charger will give a "full" signal, but the battery's capacity is too deteriorated to give sufficient power.

You'll also need to replace the "time/date" battery, a CR2016 button battery located on the side of the main battery compartment, p. 33 of the instruction manual.

If it's a bent pin, do not fix it yourself. Take it to a camera store, call first to see if they have the tool to straighten the pin. Costs little or nothing. Takes seconds to fix. My brother has kids who bent pins regularly.

Batteries are available as well. Not cheap, but manageable. You can learn enough with that camera to know whether you want to upgrade. Photo quality is a little better than iPhone 6s because it's a better lens.

That said I wouldn't put a lot of money into it. You can look up the value online but my 350D was only worth about $100 USD the last time I checked.

Enjoy it.
