A Big Aussie Reptile
12

Some photo's I took recently of a Lace Monitor or Lace Goanna as some may call it. It was about 1.5 metres long and my 4 year old's first encounter with such a reptile. He was very excited by it and asked if it could eat us. As a good daddy I said to him "yes, if your naughty or noisy today when I try to photograph it it may eat you"
Anyway he learned not to get to close and I told him that a bite from it could be very nasty if untreated. He learned his safety lesson for the day and know he knows what to do or not to do around this reptile just like he knows not to go near or disturb snakes etc. He was so interested when I told him this guy eats snakes, carion, birds, eggs etc without much fear of snake venom as it's pretty immune to poisonous snakes and eats them regulary.

I took a lot more photo's of it later in action but that's for another days post.

Enjoy!

decided to slowly and carmly climb a tree

Amazing it's this close to civilization, this really looks like the Nile Monitor in East Africa!

Crikey!

(I don't get nearly enough chances to work that into daily conversations.)

That's some lizard. I get the occasional treefrog in the yard, and that's about as close as it comes here. Rattlers in the 'burbs though, and the occasional mountain lion.

Cheers,

Rick

And a little Aussie Reptile
1

Nice shots of a truly impressive creature.

A little while back we had a baby one climbing our wall. Lyn took a quick shot with her Casio pocket camera before it wandered away. Unsure at first but when it stretched out its head in profile it had the typical goanna shape.

Bigger ones at times wander through our yard. Along with mucho other wildlife coming out of the Berowra National Park which is on our back boundary.

Regards...... Guy

Good job, vass

We have monitors/goannas here in New Ireland. I've tried to photograph them but zooming up the nearest occonut palm and sidling around it to always be on the opposite side are its methods of posing so no luck with pix.

A nice set and something I am not likely to see in its native habitat.

Ripper shots, Vass. Well done mate.

I took some shots of a truly enormous 'lace monitor' at Healesville Sanctuary (that's what the enclosure plate said ... ). I remain convinced to this day that it was actually a Komodo dragon as a ring in ... it was at least 1.5 metres from snout to base of tail, and AFAIK none of our monitors grow as large as that!

Yes, they are in fact related. The Eastern Goannas (or Lace Monitors) are generally no more than 2m in length, but the Central Australian ones can grown much bigger, second only to the Komodo Dragons.

They make themselves welcome anywhere:

Re: A Big Aussie Reptile

Lace monitors get to 2.1m long and upto 20kg. Perentie would even get bigger at upto 2.5m (head to tail) and just about 20+kg.

Maybe they don't grow as large in colder Australian climates.
