Problem Using Manual Settings G11

Hi,

I just bought a used Canon Powershot G11 from B&H and I am having trouble setting shutter/aperture manually. When I turn the control dial to change the settings it's as if the connection between the dial and the camera is slipping. If I'm at a shutter speed of 1/1000 for instance and try to adjust to 1/60" by turning the dial the numbers will start to decrease to 1/500",  1/250", 1/125" and then suddenly reverse and begin going back up to 1/1000". I'm not sure why this is happening. Am I doing something wrong or is the camera broken? I must say that for a supposedly simple camera the G11 has one of the most complicated and convoluted user interfaces I've ever encountered and I've been a photographer for many years.

Thanks!

1/60th might be beyond the metering range at that light level and ISO.  Are you in full manual mode when this happens?

Re: Problem Using Manual Settings G11

This happened to my S120 (after several hard falls). *If* it's a physical issue with the dial it should be happening in other places too... eg, in menus, or anything else that can be controlled by the dial. Check that.

That’s what happened with my G11 too. That issue with the dial was discussed a lot in the G11 group on Flickr.

You can change aperture and shutter speed by holding down the S button (left upper corner of LCD) and then use the right or left arrows of the dial.
