Copy variation: which one should i keep?

Hello,

Last week i bought an NX20 and i aquired a second 18-55. I made some test to figure out which one is the best and sell the other.

The test is made shooting to a self printed chart (a bit spartan) in jpeg.

Sample A 18mm f3.5

Sample B 18mm f3.5

Sample A 55mm f5.6

Sample B 55mm f5.6

Help and comment are welcome, choose the one you prefere or suggest other mothod to test.

(Later i will post a different test...)

B. They are so different that unless you did something wrong (the lens was smudged, camera shaken, whatever) it's obvious.

This is not the first round of tests that i run, always got similar result. Will you choose sample B?

I will wait for some other comment, then i will post mine.

Re: Copy variation: which one should i keep?

I guess I'm not seeing what everyone else is seeing. Sample B seems to me better. B has worse edges, but that's more likely to get better when stopping down than sampleA's center sharpness. Also, shooting raw would help seeing the differences much better than jpeg, which introduces lots of sharpening artifacts and other things.

What better post could there be to convince all not to buy used.

I already feel sorry for the person you sell your lens to.

Re: Copy variation: which one should i keep?

This is what i see: Sample A has better center sharpness ( also better t'han My 20-50,and My 16-50pz) but the smallest sharp center zone. It performs exactly How is expected based on review around.

Sample B is sharp from corner to corner at 18mm f3.5 and that is anomal to me. It is on par with My 20-50 at 20mm and better t'han the pz at 16mm. It keep the same edge to edge performance but after 45mm it the center becomes less sharp t'han sample A. Also i see a lot less CA in this Lens.

Does anyone see the same?

I am humbled because sample B looks a lor better exept 55mm where it needs to be stopped down or just not zoomed that far..

In my comment above I mixed A with B and viceversa. Seems I forgot the letters by the time I wrote the comment, lol.

I cant fully agree... Did you consider that both lenses in the past where sold as new? Also i bought the both used and was pretty happy with the result i Got from sample A.

Re: Copy variation: which one should i keep?

You really, really need to use sturdy tripod to shoot comparison photos. For example, second set of images (Fender amp) light falls differently in two cases causing different images (and not a bit different, quite a lot), first image was not shot from the same exact distance or relative angle (one of them is slightly crooked, but which one?). Fix the camera and take the shots. RAW and not in camera processed and sharpened JPEGs.

For me, I would pick lens that much more uniform (and is very good at 18mm) than the one that is slightly sharper in the center but is blurry from midpoint on (and is much worse at 18mm). That said, only you can know what kind of photographs you take (landscape, portrait, detail shots, architecture, ...) and what is more important to you.

That sounds promising.

Am I right to think that you will link your potential buyers to this thread for their consideration?

RJ, your implication is quite sad...

Usually i sell my gear only local, because i hate post offices. So the buyers comes to my house and test as they like the gear. Since i dont want to waste anybody time, all defects of the stuff i sell (or at least the one i know about) are listed to the buyer BEFORE we meet. The buyer has my phone and know where i live (and live close usually), so if there is a problem anything can be retourned and refounded easily.

Also my prices are always a bit below the local average.

Nothing sad about my post and I implied nothing. I just asked a question.

I sincerely thank you for your post as it will serve as a good lesson to newbies visiting here contemplating a purchase of used equipment.

I myself either keep my equipment, pass it on to family, or trade it in. I do not want to get in a buyer/ seller relationship over camera gear.

Thanks again.
