Re: Oly 17mm f1.8 or Oly 25mm f1.8

The 25mm is a tad sharper but the 17mm is more versatile and better built + it has Manual pull ring

I'd recommend the 17mm in your case

Cheers,

Re: Oly 17mm f1.8 or Oly 25mm f1.8

As mentioned you have 14 - 30 - 45 and that's a good three lens kit. You could stand pat with those lenses. 17 (35mm in full frame) and 25 (50 mm) should be considered replacements for either the 14 or the 30 in your system - (by "replacement" I mean that you are getting a lens in a very similar focal length that will presumably improve performance of your current lens making it less useful).

The reason to go for the Olympus 25 to "replace" your 30 with a better and more useful lens. The Olympus 25 has a nice rendering, is quite sharp and focuses closer than your 30, I would imagine. 25 is a more useful FL than 30 whereas 14 is more useful as a wide angle in a multi-lens kit than a 17.

The reason to go for the 17: it is the single most useful focal length (period). Reportedly, the Olympus 17 is not as good a performer as the 25, but if you don't like using different lenses for different purposes, and if you don't like to change lenses on the fly, I'd get the 17. It could become a one lens prime kit.

17mm is handy FOV and compact

I just received my new O-Md E-M10 Mark ll a few days ago and want to add a new Oly lens to my arsenal. I have the Oly 45mm f1.8 already, and love it. My other prime lenses consist of a Sigma 30mm f2.8, OLy 12-50 f3.5-6.3, Pany 14mm f2.5 and a Pany zoom lens, as well as 3 legacy lenses. Taking those lenses into account, which of the 2 lenses I mentioned in my title would be a good fit?

Kevin.

By default, if the 12-40mm is not on my camera then the 17mm is. Pairs well with the smaller E-M10 and great indoors as well.

Thank-You To All Who Replied

I just wanted to reply back here after all the great suggestions that were given to my OP and offer up a big Thank-you. I haven't been on DPReview for long, but I am amazed at all the help that I have received when I have made a post. It is very much appreciated.

After all was said and done though, my decision was "none of the above". I had been wanting the Panasonic Leica DG Summilux 25mm f1.4 for some time, but the price was what always turned me away. Well the other night I was on eBay looking around for a deal on the Oly 17mm f1.8 and the Oly 25mm f1.8 when I decided to take another look at the Pany 25mm f1.4. Well as luck would have it, I came across a gentleman who was selling his brand new, in box, with all accessories for $419.00, or "best offer". I put in an offer of $375.00, and he accepted it. I feel like I won the lottery. So I am very stoked to finally have this lens needless to say. Now I will have to decide which lens I won't really need anymore with the arrival of the 25mm.

Hope his rating was good and you won the lottery. If so, he seems like he lost money.

Dale, his feedback is 100% since 2000, 375 feedbacks, and he had multiple sales of high dollar Olympus gear including lenses and O-MD cameras, as well as Nikon and Canon gear too. I've been on eBay since 1999 and know what to look for in a seller. He definitely checked out in my book.

Killer deal then, I thought I got it for a good price when I ordered it from Canada and paid just over $400, but <$400 is pretty rare indeed.

Glad to hear it worked out, if differently than you expected. Please post some photos when you get it! I never really thought I would get the 12-40, but stumbled upon an amazing deal and haven't looked back. Still longing for a prime for when I want to travel light and simplify, and the 17/1.8 is probably it, but you never know what might come along.

Given what you have already, the 60 or 75 would perhaps make more sense? If you have to have either the 17 or 25, then I'd favour the 17.

I'd favor the 17 over a 25 too. But I just bought the Panny 25, because at 1/3 the price of the Oly, it's kind of a no-brainer. (Even if you missed the $99 blowout, it looks like it's still available for about $150.)
