Question for Canon 50mm STM owners

I received the 50mm F1.8 STM from Amazon last night and didn't have a lot of time to play with it on my 70D. I'm a little concerned about the quality of the product and how it arrived. Here's my experience:

1. Upon opening the box, the top part of the lens was protected by bubble wrap, whilst the bottom had the plastic mold to support the lens. Shouldn't there have been a molded piece on the top as well? Was I shipped a returned item while paying for a new one?

2. The picture quality of the low-light indoor test shots are good, but I did notice that it kept trying to focus on things while moving it but not half-pressing the shutter button. Is this normal for this lens in low-light conditions? I don't recall the 18-135mm kit lens exhibiting this behavior.

3. Any tips on how to test the quality/performance of this lens?

Thanks,

Skippy

Fairly sure my lens came with the top mold as well.

Never experienced anything like this.

3. Any tips on how to test the quality/performance of this lens?

Put it on a tripod and shoot at various apertures/subjects using a remote shutter release. I've found the new STM version very sharp and accurate even wide open.

Thanks,

Skippy

Thanks DannH. I'll try those tips and also confirm that I wasn't imagining the focusing issue.

I find unboxing videos are a waste of data. But they do answer silly questions about packaging -

Nope, the plastic mold is only on the bottom in my box.

This sounded very strange to me until I read you are using the 70D.  This is a stretch, but if you are in video mode, with the dual-pixel autofocus, the lens will try to autofocus continuously... is that possible?
