18-55 STM vs 24mm 2.8 STM: the better?

Hi,

actually i have a 18-55 STM Canon Lens that I have bought to upgrade the very old 18-55 lens that I have from 2005.

Now i want to ask, what do you think about the 24mm f2.8 lens? It's an upgrade to the 18-55 STM lens or it's better to remain on my 18-55 STM?

Thanks!

Canon EF-S 24mm F2.8 STM Nikon 24mm F1.8G ED

The EF-S 24 f/2.8 STM is better at 24mm than is the 18-55 STM.  But the zoom is much better at 18-23mm and 25-55mm

great answer. in fact...

the only way to answer such a strange question.  if I were limited to one lens, which sounds like the OP is hinting at, it would be a zoom.

The advantage of the 24 / 2.8 STM over the 18-55 / 3.5-5.6 STM IS is that it's a stop faster, smaller, and lighter (the resolution and vignetting differences between them are trivial).  The advantage of the zoom over the prime (aside from the obvious fact that it goes from 18-55mm rather than being locked in at 24mm) is that it has IS.

So, if neither size nor an extra stop are a priority, go with the zoom.

Vignetting is indeed the same when both lense are wide open...however the prime is wide open at F2.8 and the zoom at F4 if you look at the prime at F4 which to match the zoom at 24mm the prime is 1 stop better

. The advantage of the zoom over the prime (aside from the obvious fact that it goes from 18-55mm rather than being locked in at 24mm) is that it has IS.

yes i think so too.

i went for the prime for size as it is on my SL1/100D 95% of the time left at F2.8 80% of the time

EDIT anther plus for the prime is the very close focusing ..its so close i am surprised canon did not put a "macro" moniker on it.....i have had canon and other lenses that

have macro on them that focus nowhere as near as close as this lens

Personally, I'd get a 50mm 1.8

Actually I have the 18-55 year 2005-2006, i know that is one of the worse series.

Do you suggest to upgrade to the 18-55 STM because is more versatile or go with a 24mm and a 50 mm fixed lens?

Although zooms are more versatile, I would suggest you try a prime instead. The faster aperture, (generally) better IQ and the fact that having a fixed length can help you learn to adapt as a photographer.

50mm at f/1.8 is radically different from 50-55mm at f/5.6, so the prime has a decided advantage here.  However, 24mm at f/2.8 is not so radically different from 24mm at f/3.5.

One option you may wish to consider is the 10-18 STM + 24 STM + 50 STM (would be nice if Canon made a 10 / 2.8 STM and 15 / 2.8 STM -- perhaps they will, in time).

I'd kill for a 10mm 2.8!
