totally off topic and you know it .. I have posted how many photographs ? on this thread and not all are PP .. to keep you happy .. You do not like the lens - big deal ..

This shows exactly what I said, Unpleasant colours, a somewhat pale/flat picture rendition. Thank you very much.

LOL it was taken with a GX1 camera (in low light on a summers evening) .. PS did I criticize your photos with a off topic lens ..

keep up the good work with the GH4.. now I am ending this discussion .. your contributions to this thread are well inane

Blimey! I just read the rest of the thread

and it seems to be all about Don Parrot's outlandish denigration of the colours and rendering of the 20mm.

Strange stuff.

My MkI 20mm stays on my e-pL7 to combine the small size, bright aperture and awesome stabilisation in one package.

My ancient Zuiko 17mm F2.8 pancake has slightly better colours and much better flare behaviour but it is not fast so doesn't count.

So ... for the O.P. : MkI to MkII seems merely a cosmetic upgrade.

The 20mm focuses faster on Panasonic bodies. And surprisingly well in low light.

Lumix 15mm, 25mm, Zuiko 17mm, 25mm ...

If I were choosing today, I'd probably get a 15mm, but the 20mm is really quite unique in terms of size and optical performance. It's really that good… contrary to some deluded fixations.

Now I'll go and read the rest of the thread.

You may not want too.

Hey Frank,

Where did you shoot that? FANTASTIC! Those are old RDC (Rail Diesel Car) Budd Cars. I thought they'd all been scrapped! COOL! I love those things.

When I was in high school I had engineer buddies that worked for the Penn Central… the Needham Branch out of Boston. I rode in the cab of those things all the time… to and from Boston, to Providence and Westerly Rhode Island!! Blowing the whistle at grade crossings. A couple of my buddies even let me run them … WITH passengers! I ran them before I could even drive a car! Really.

I should dig through my old slides and Tri-X prints…

The GH4 caught the 20mm mounted on other bodies.

How jaded are we?

Try to find a lens equivalent to the P20/1.7 in e-mount. I think the closest they have in specs is the 24/1.8 at about $1000 and it is awful at the edges below F/5.6.

I have the 20/1.7 II and love it. I've had two of the Series II's and a Series I. Never had a problem focusing, don't know what some people are talking about. I have one right now on my E-P5 next to me, in a darkened room and it snaps to focus on anything I point it to. Compared to my G1X and EOS M, this AF is lightning fast.

The sharpness, contrast and color rendition of the 20/1.7 is legendary and well warranted in it's reputation. https://flic.kr/p/zQwMo4

I've tried the 25/1.4 and the 25/1.8 and for sure, the 1.4 ain't worth the money and the 1.8 is just OK and still a bit larger than the 1.7. The 40mm perspective is a practical FOV and makes the P20 unique.

I've always loved the way a 20/1.7 looks on any of my Olympus PEN's. A perfect match.

I have ordered the new P25/1.7 and it's on back-order but, I know I will be disappointed in the build quality and sharpness having experienced the lovely 20/1.7, oh well we'll see.

I recommend the Series II.

Re: How jaded are we?

I have the series I, bought secondhand.  It is the only AF MFT lens in my bag and I just had to have it.

AF on the EM1 is a tad slow and rather noisy.  Since I don't do video and I am a habitual prefocusser to WYSISWG with the EVF, it's never been an issue.

I can recommend the series I too.

Maybe I got a good copy, but the IQ and rendering are as good as the reviews said.

The 20/1.7 is a great lens, and lots of people are happy with it on the E-M10. However, some people report occasional problems with banding and with purple fringes with that body.

I don't have a big budget, hence the lens options. I'm looking around at used lenses, and it looks like the mark 2 is about $50-$100 more than its predecessor. What advantages does it have, if any? Should I spend the extra cash? Also, these lenses will work fine on my Olympus camera, right?

Thanks.

Daniel , I have both lenses the mk1 came with my GF1 and the mk2 with my GX7 { fortunately there isn’t a mk3 or I would probably have bought it with my GX8   }. The optical quality of both lenses is excellent and all but identical. Sadly for those not happy with the AF speed { I am not one of them} there was no improvement in this area. The mk2 has a bit better build quality though not by any great margin. Unfortunately there are a couple of known issues on several Olympus bodies which do not present on Panasonic cameras . I believe the difference is due to Olympus adding the corrected filtration to their lenses whilst Panasonic does so on their sensors.

Though the 20mm is my favourite mFT lens { small, light and capable of great results} for use on an Olympus camera I would suggest an Olympus lens.

No difference between I and II other than cosmetics. This lens is fully compatible with Olympus M43 camera bodies. Get the MK1 if it's cheaper.

Saying that, unless the ~40mm equiv FOV or small size are the main reasons you're looking at this lens, I would go with one of the 25mm lenses instead, because the 20/1.7 hunts quite a bit when focusing in low light on Olympus bodies, and causes banding on bodies with the 16MP sony sensor, which is most of of the current gen olys.

Okay, but then I'm looking at $300-$350, at which point I may as well go for the Olympus 17mm 1.8.

If you're talking about USD$ - as opposed to the cheaper northern version - that price should get you a used 25mm Pana-Leica F1.4. Aside from it's pesky clicking noise as the diaphragm adjusts itself, it's a wonderful lens.

I am really enjoying my 20mm f/1.7 Mk.I with my E-M10 - the field of view is good for me.   One thing to remember is that this is a small light lens that lets you carry it everywhere and shoot from the hip.  I was walking to the theater this w/e when I fired off this shot so have had to quickly straighten it and crop it a bit... Not particularly slow to focus though and no banding that affects the photo.   I have 14mm,25mm and 45mm primes as well but use the 20mm alot.. Recommended..
