I'm looking at Amazon where the Olympus E-M10 is now selling for $469.99 with lens. I have one of these...it is first rate and being heavily discounted now that it's replacement camera has arrived. THAT is your best buy.

Because he might find that body style more familiar and comfortable.

Menus supposed to be easier than Oly.

It is late model.

You have lenses you can share (loan)

Have not heard too many problems with Panny bodies.

The PL7 has no built-in flash. They include a small external flash but for me it's not nearly as convenient as a built-in.

I'm not impressed with either of Olympus' 14-42 kit lenses.
The "II" is decent optically but has a toyish plastic mount, a pet peeve of mine.
The redeeming fact is a lense can be easily upgraded at some point.

Was the Canon M3 eliminated for some reason ?
I would have been interested to see if it could compete against the others being considered.

The A6000 and M3 have small bodies but the lenses are larger/heavier than their u4/3 counterparts.

If the remaining (M10, G6, G7) have your language available your choice has been narrowed quite nicely. It would be a toss-up between these good choices.

ps - I have an OM-D E-M10 (but no Oly kit zoom) I use with fast prime lenses and 2.8 zoom.

Best luck - Let us know what you choose !

Personally I would go for the G6, because it gives you the most bang for your buck. E-PL7 lacks viewfinder. Others, fine but more expensive. I think that the G7 is the only one to give you 4K burst shooting and 4K video, plus with next week's software update will give some kind of still focus-stacking using the 4K video burst while adjusting the focus and allowing you to extract an 8mp still where you want the focus to be.

You could probably find a cheap hardly-used Panasonic 14/42 kit lens on eBay for it if you really can't afford to buy it as part of the camera kit.

Whether you actually want or will use that sophistication is doubtful. It depends on his age and ability and experience. All these cameras can be used as point and shoot but all are as very sophisticated in their own way.

That is a consideration. Of course, none of the cameras on the list will not be stellar in low light with the lenses listed. The M4/3 camera bodies will, however, give a better image and also allow more choices. Since weight was mentioned, I suggested the Bridge Camera because it is self-contained. It might make sense to find out if low light and lens changing are something of interest.

Bridge cameras are an option, but since he wants some good low light capability, I think only Sytlus 1s would be an option due to sensor size.

Sensor size is far less of an issue than lens size.

Probably a Sony RX10 II.
An interchangeable lens camera will only be better if you buy some proper lenses.  Dual kit zoom?  Get a good bridge camera instead.

Hi,

I am looking a camera for my father to replace his Canon 600D which he didn't use mainly because of size of body, lenses and weight. He wants to have relatively good low light capability and some long zoom (150mm). Cost is an issue (600€) but we are open to suggestions, even used ones. I have the following kits which seem interesting:

Panasonic G5 (14-140)....645€

I'd vote for that, plus a 25mm f1.7.

BUT… Why not a GX7 with 14-42mm II and 45-150mm or 14-140mm II. Add a 25mm f1.7 for low light.

I just got back from South Africa and my wife was using the new Lumix FZ300. I could not believe the quality of the images. It's super light, has an effective lens from 25mm to 600mm, dop dead simple to use with RAW, Touch Screen LCD, Touch Pad AF and more. For those who want Fast, Light and Mobile this camera can't be beat.

It is an excellent choice in so many ways. It is a small sensor version of the G7 in many ways. A larger sensor version but even closer to a G6 or G7 with their 14/140 lens, but with a fixed lens is the FZ1000.

It should be noted that the FZ 300/330 and Sony RX10 are moderately environmentally sealed.

. . . .

Greek is a language option on my UK E-M10. It is the fifth option down in the second column, under Italian.. There are 34 language choices in all.

My G6 only has 6 languages and no Greek.

My US (?) E-M10 has 34 languages, many I don't recognize.
If Greek is there I can't decipher it.

edit: Is this it ?

"ελληνικά"

If so it's on mine as well.

That's Greek to me!

Yes that is Greek.

Mine may not be a proper US model E-M10.
It's that unusual lizard skin special edition.

That's useful camouflage when someone is cruising the Florida swamps for critters.

Re: Please suggest me a camera for my father

I have an Olympus E-M10, but for your father I would suggest a Sony RX10, original model.

I had one about a year ago and the flexibility is superb.  All in one, equivalent 24-200 mm f2.8 lens, 1" sensor.  Good low light and movie performance.  Images stand up well to m4/3 or APS C cameras.

The one negative I had is the zoom is quite slow.

Cost could be an issue, but look for deals and people selling to move to Mk 2.

Re: Some used options that came up today...

Just browsing at local used online store, I stumbled upon these:

1) FZ1000....500E

2) Oly EPL7 body....250E

3) Oly EPL5 + 14-42 II....250E

I think the 1st one might be a good chance, no?

The FZ1000 looks like a great deal. Do you think it might be too heavy at 831 g (1.83 lb / 29.31 oz)?

The EPL5 body weighs 325 g (0.72 lb / 11.46 oz) and the EPL7 357 g (0.79 lb / 12.59 oz)shinndigg

Is his father likely to carry such a big camera around regularly? No? In which case it is not a good choice. The best camera is always the one you have with you. The most likely camera most people will have with them is probably a smaller and lighter camera. Not always of course. It depends very much on the person and on the day. It is something important to consider.

Re: He finally got one!!

Thank you all for the great advice, we settled down to an OMD M10 II with the kit lens (14-42).

I had the chance to try the camera just for a few minutes and noticed the EVF to "tremble" or "teare" a bit in low light indoors. Is this normal?

In addition to the 'tremble', you'll notice a hissing sound too when the IBIS engages.  You can configure to disable both the 'tremble' and 'hissing' by engaging IBIS only on shutter release - Cog-C: Half Way Rls With IS=off.  I have that off for my EM10.  Should be similar for MkII.
