Rainbow Bee-eaters (moslty in flight)
27

Had an arvo free a few days ago and thougth id'e head out to get some Rainbow bee-eaters and any other species that got in my way. I only had 2 1/2 hrs before the sun got too low so thought id'e make the most of it. Anyway I was pretty happy with the end results as I got a fair amount of flight shots. The only thing I wish was having some extra reach to bring more details out but I can't eally fault the 40-150 pro with the TC for what it is.

Anyway here are some of the days captures of Rainbow Bee-eaters, enjoy!

male bulleting upwards in flight

male in flight

probably the closest one I got so far of this male

female

male flying low

male flying low again

female bullet

female with wings spread

female and male (L to R)

Oh you lucky bugger. Love these birds, but they are hard to find in SA.

Great shots.

Thanks Martin

I feel very lucky to see these birds. They are the only Bee-eater that's is in Australia. Most of the species are in Africa and Asia

Very well done job of capturing the very challenging BIF images -- they are lovely birds.

I would imagine that you are already saving for the 300mm f/4.

Beautiful birds well caught Vass. The bullet images are quite unusual, looks like they should afterburners

Absolutely stunning birds the bee eaters. Wonderful colours and details. Excellent work Vas, nicely done and taken, great to see them in flight, but also great to see them perched to see the details we miss with flight shots. Love it !!

All the best Vas and fantastic work and shots.

Danny.

Truly excellent series. I struggle to get close to them around here even though they are quite plentiful. I love their flight pattern, the bullet climb transforms into a graceful gliding arc with a flash of colour. Their smooth flight belies their awesome proficiency in hunting flying insects.

I love the click sound you hear when they snap the insect in their beaks

Bee eaters are insanely unique birds.  Spent almost a week back in 1999 (film days) shooting in a national park in Sri Lanka to get four or five shots of them that I loved and that I could sell.  Probably 20 rolls of 36 exposures film.  Maybe more, I should look at my journal, but I remember going to bed every night thinking that I was the definition of a fool for trying to catch great shots of these speedy birds.

Nice work.  You should be hugely proud.

Great shots!

But tell me, how did you get that close to them?

I've tried but only managed to get images that need a fair bit of cropping.

I love the unusual shape of their wings and tails.

Well done!
