Moody November
11

We've had some long overcast, grey, days here in the last week, but when the sun does peep through, the results can be worth a trip outside with the EX1.

The low light picking out the texture of the beach.

Early morning fog.

A narrow slit in the cloud cover.

In this light, even a cattle-grid can look good.

A barn that I've passed by many times suddenly looks photogenic in the winter light.

I long for a camera with better image quality than the EX1, but it will have to have the portability of the EX1 that allows me to keep it in a pocket ready for quick use. It will also need to have a fully articulating screen like the EX1.

These are lovely moody images with beautiful light, thanks for showing them to us! I especially like the first three, among them the lovely swans.

I think they not only represent the somber November mood very well, but also the forum's.

It looks like you have a nice cam there, a compact, right? I assume the images are edited? Well done in any case!

Thanks for the comments Andrea. The camera used was a Samsung EX1 (yes a compact), and the RAW files were processed through Adobe DNG Converter-Adobe Camera RAW/Photoshop. The HDR shots were done in Photomatix 4.

Re: Moody November

Thanks! A compact with raw, that in part explains the good IQ. And you mention Photomatix, as someone else did recently. I should give it a look. I very much like your swans.

A very good compact camera, but I would like to have something with better image quality, ie a larger sensor. However, despite the hundreds of models available from all manufacturers, there isn't a single one that ticks all my boxes, ie larger APS-C sensor, no viewfinder, and fully articulating screen. I don't mind a fixed lens, if it goes as wide as 24mm, or an ILC.

Re: Moody November

Very nice shots, first one with the man walking the dog is fantastic!

Samsung rumours aside, you should give the NX500 a good look, even if its screen is only tilting. But you can flip it all way up to take selfies with it! And it's a fantastic touch sceen. The camera is addictive and fun, producing excellent images even with its 16-50 kit lens, with which it is not much bigger than a very good compact, except for Sony's tiny RX100 series. IQ with the NX500 is much better, though.

Re: Moody November

great shots with the EX, still feeling sad that they did not build an EX3 with the 1" of the mini inside

as much as I agree with the rest of your staements of the great features of the NX500, I at any time would throw away that selfie flip screen to get back the mechanism of the NX300 .

One reason I did not yet sell my NX300

Andrea, if you look again at the picture above of the man and dog, you will notice that it is taken from about ankle height (to include the foreground water). That was possible because I could angle the screen at 90 degrees (with the camera in portrait mode) to compose the shot. You cannot do that with a tilting screen (unless you have a tilting neck)!

That's the reason many of us want a fully articulating screen. If manufacturers are going to the trouble of hinging a screen to tilt, why not make it fully articulating? It is no more flimsy that way, and taking the EX1/2 as an example, it adds no more bulk to the camera. If a manufacturer adds a tilting screen to a camera to facilitate selfies, then I have a hard time taking that model seriously (no matter what its picture quality is like).

There are so many pictures to look at on the Internet that it is very difficult to post something that is a bit different. One of the ways to create a striking picture is to use an extreme POV. To do that we need a fully articulating screen.

Are you listening Samsung, Sony, Canon, et al? Panasonic, Canon, and Nikon put fully articulating screens on some of their cameras, usually the DSLR type, so why not on the more compact cameras too?

This has been a public appeal on behalf of the 'Let's take more interesting photos' Club. Rant over.

I agree tjobbe2, while I would like to go to an APS-C sensor, an EX3 using the 1 inch sensor would be a big step in the right direction.

Re: Moody November

True, in portrait mode the flip-only screen is a drawback. I can live with that, but free articulating would be better. The D750 screen is only tilting, too, and no selfie position, lol! I wonder if this has to do with the stability and the size of the screen in comparison to the body.
