thanks in anticipation.

Re: Canon G16 vs

If you were happy with the G11 and don't care about the lack of a flip-out screen you should definitely go with the G16. It is now available for a knock down price. The G7X would be an alternative consideration (wider angle lens).

If you are considering the G1X II and G3X etc - basically you need to handle them in a shop to determine if the additional size and weight is acceptable.

I think g5x is the closest successor to g16. Take a look at g7x images as well; same sensor and lens as g5x.

At this time G5 X is closet to OP's G11 feature wise (articulating LCD, hot shoe, etc.) and size wise; G16 would be better option as to smaller size/ pocketable a priority.

Re: Canon G16 vs

I would suggest G5X - very good IQ, good ergonomics, decent VF, build-in flash, nice LCD.

Choices, choices.

There's no right or wrong here. All the Powershots are excellent cameras and Canon is really upping it's game with the 1" sensor cameras (G3X, G5X, G7X and G9X). Thta's good for Canon and great for the consumer.

The G5X is probably the most adherent to the classic G series lineage (apart from the original G1X, which is my favorite) but, it's selling for an eye popping $800! Yikes.

Is the G5X a good value at that price? I don't know, possibly not. The G7X can be had right now for about $458 and it has a longer lens. I guess it's all in what you're willing to pay for.

But, I think you would be doing yourself a disfavor if you didn't at least look at a Fujifilm X30 as a comparison. At about $420 brand new, it's a ridiculous bargain. I had one and wish I hadn't a sold it. One of the best cameras I've had the pleasure to own.

The G16 has been out for 2 years, but it is still quite a good camera. See my thread about it:

http://www.dpreview.com/forums/post/54568251

It looks like the new G5X is meant to continue the line. I spent about 30 minutes playing with it last week and have also spent time giving it serious thought. Here in Japan the price is better than in the States: $600 and that includes 2 batteries. I am still thinking it over since I am in no hurry. In my case, there are several things I don't like much about the G5X but, of course, other things I like.

Good luck with your decision.

Re: Canon G16 vs

Consider a newer 1in sensor power shot. I doubt Canon will continue the G16-series given the crash of p&s sales as the growth of high end larger sensor compacts

ohhhkay just when i thought i might be narrowing it down ... there is a G9x too? right

and you suggest the fujifim X30? ... i will check it out ... thank you too !

it really is not ONLY about what one is willing to pay for ... its about what comes with it ....

a longer lens i can live without

a macro i would go for at extra dollars

a wider lens i would choose over other options ....

the g series has been fabulous for me ... on many levels ... thanks for the feedback ... again, i appreciate it very much

can you point me in the direction of 'a newer 1in sensor powershot' ... or is that the G5,7,9X series?

thank you to you and everyone ! .... i shall ruminate in the morning.

I recently replaced my 5 year old G11 with a G16.

Basically the same camera with a few changes that took me some getting use to.

I use it for those times that I don't want to lug my 6D around.

I had taken a close look at the G5X but at twice the price of the G16, I chose the G16 and I'm very happy with it.

All depends on your budget and acceptable image quality.

The G15 and G16 do provide good quality images for a 12MP 1/1.7" sensor.

But neither can match the image quality of the G5 X's larger 1" 20MP sensor.

You can compare the image quality comparisons between the G16, G5 X and other cameras with the DPR Studio Scene Comparison Tool.

Studio Scene Comparison Tool - Normal Light

Studio Comparison Tool - Low Light Option (light bulb icon)

As you can see the G5 X image quality can compare quite well to APS-C sensor DSLR's image quality.

If my G15 died, I would get the G5 X without a second thought.

I have the FZ1000 that uses the same Sony 1" sensor as Canon using in the G3 X, G5 X, G7 X, and G9 X.

You can view images in my FZ1000_RRPL album that are all FZ1000 RAW images PP w/ DxO Optics Pro, all the classic car images are 1600 ISO. From gallery view Original size option

ah yes ... now you are making it difficult ... i shall keep it in mind ... yes to better quality except i was under the impression (when i first went to Canon G ... a 9 after the ixus) that the quality was great and a backup camera for professionals ... maybe its all moved on...  i shall look into it ... G5x, G16 ....   so, why not a G9x?  putting aside budget which will drive the ultimate decision of course ...

Re: Canon G16 vs

Make your decision based on your needs. Not pixel peeping images. Yes, people very happy with G16, but unfortunately versatility in any lowish light situation is weak compared to the 1" type cameras.

Look at the strengths and weaknesses of each camera. The G16 only strength IMO is it's price, in comparison to the others you have on the table (G7X, G9X, G5X). G9X strength is that it's small and truly pocketable... G7X, bright tele, great bokeh and versatility (for cameras in this size class), tiltable display. G5X, Same lens as G7X, tiltable display, more physical controls, and more options (HDR bracketing, 24p/25p/30p/50p/60p video), EVF, hot shoe

Then consider the negatives... eg, G9X no tiltable display, dimmer tele, less reach.... G7X, a bit too bulky to be truly pocketable....G5X, biggest and most expensive.

In a nutshell.
