Canon EF 24mm F2.8

I just picked up one of these, its the original not the newer IS version. I wanted to get one to see if I liked/could use the 24mm focal length as a prime and it compliments my other two lenses well (50mm 1.4 + 85mm 1.8) I have a fisheye for water shots but it creates an odd looking shot in most instances.

I have to say that I was expecting ok to good IQ from this lens but I'm frankly astounded at how sharp this thing is - especially as its an "older" lens. The vignetting is quite severe even for F2.8 but easily fixed in lightroom.

Anyone else find this to be a super sharp lens? I have compared to some shots i took using the 24-70 mk2 and I can see hardly anything in it. I use a 6D BTW.

Very Happy with my purchase now - only problem is - I was planning to get the 24mm F1.4L ii if I liked this and I'm now scratching my head as to wether I'd gain much IQ (I appreciate the low light implications).

That is because of wide angle on FF, mostly. Microlens issue.

It always has been a hidden gem in the Canon line up.

To be fair, the vignetting doesn't bother me at all, I quite like it for portraits, can see it might be a bit annoying for landscapes but then you'd not likely be at 2.8.

It's odd, theres hardly any reviews online about it, best keep it a secret eh !

Indeed, that way I may be able to get my hands on one really cheap!

Which lens are you talking about? There are 3 24mm 2.8 ones. The pancake or the old non pancake or the new is one?

"its the original not the newer IS version".

That answers it (EF 24mm f2.8 also answers it).

Anyone have the IS version?  Same lens + IS or a different lens?  Thanks!

Hi, the original one from 1991 onwards, it doesn't have IS. the build quality on it is very good too - I forgot to mention that.

I had it for crop. It was good for the 6MP generation, but sold it after i got a 18MP crop and the 17-55. The large pixel 6d should be good with it, but it wouldn't hold up well with a 5Ds.

Thats good as I have no plans to ever buy a 5Ds, I don't print photos bigger than 3ft x 3ft. Ever.

Canon EF24mm F/2.8 IS

I have had this lens for about a year and have been very pleased with it.   It is the IS version, although quite frankly I don't always feel the need to use IS and usually have it switched off. I paid around  $550CAN for it, brand new.    It's not a cheap lens, well finished and USM.  This shot was wide open, F/2.8 on my 6d.:-)   Straight out of the camera, no PP.

That sounds odd, the 24mm f2.8 still is pretty good on APS-C. 6MP, did you have a 10D or 300D?

The 300D (and later the 10MP 400D).

It was the overlap without being faster or even stabilized with the 17-55 that was the main driver of selling it. It turns out i'm also not that big a fan of ~35mm eq. primes either....
