4k macro frame grab...
1

I wanted to see what you could get out of the 60mm macro using a 4k frame grab. I converted the H265 video with the Samsung Movie Converter and opened it in PS CC. Boy it was slow to go through to find a frame. I was backing up one of my hard drives at the same time - might be the problem? Just picked a couple frames and went to the Image tab and then Duplicate from the drop down and saved it as a .jpg 12 quality.

I was about ready to get rid of the 60mm macro. I was trying to shoot a small butterfly the other day and could not get focus where I wanted it. I finally figured out today that I had face detection turned on. That must have been the problem. Today it worked excellent with excellent sharpness too. I did crop one of them slightly.

Re: 4k macro frame grab...

You didn't say which Samsung camera you used, but with the NX1 you can do video frame grabs right in camera (and I wouldn't be surprised if other new NX cameras do it as well - others can chime in). It's very quick and easy. Pause the video on the screen and push the Fn button. It creates a separate image with the next counter # without affecting the video. Download to your computer as normal. Here is a SOOC grab from a FHD video (not 4k) to give you an idea of how it comes out:

With MPC-HC (it's free) you can look each H264 or H265 video, jump from frame to frame, pressing Alt-I saves pictures.

With MPC-HC (it's free) you can look each H264 or H265 video, jump from frame to frame, pressing Alt-I saves pictures.

Indeed, MPC-HC works perfectly with NX1 h.265 videos to pull out still frame grabs.

I changed the program's preferences as follows:

Key '.' = next frame

Key ',' = previous frame (jumps back about 3 frames)

Key 'm' = save the currently viewed frame. NOTE: you must use Alt-I first to select a folder to save your stills to when you press 'm'.

This One Key set-up enables me to use one hand's three fingers to move from frame to frame forward or backward or to save a still frame.

Additionally my set-up enables me to create hot key scripts which I created to grab a full second or full minute of consecutive still frames, ( or any other length of time I want as long as memory permits. This is extremely useful for People/Event 4K shoots).

I save the 4K still frames as .PNG's.

All this makes me one very happy photographer.

I was "friend of VLC" .. but for 4K/H265  ...MPC-HC is better.

For "post production" of my 4K videos I use Wondershare Video Converter

Still frame of the same...

For a comparison, this is a still frame of the same spider wart grouping.  It is more cropped than the video frame grabs also.
