Remote (IR) shutter release with smartphone

I don't know why it's taken me so long to tumble to the fact that since my smartphone has an IR Blaster, I can use it to remote-trigger my Canon DSLR. My ancient DSLR, that is: a Rebel XT/350D.

I tried three apps and had difficulty with all of them. Apparently the range of the IR Blaster on my LG G2 is only about 4 feet for this purpose. I finally settled on DSLR Remote by bitshift, simply because its UI met my needs. For simple remote triggering, it's got two big buttons: shoot now, and start 2-second timer. Same as Canon's RC-1.

Very informative however I've always preferred just getting the OEM Canon remote.
