Hoping for a 50mm equivalent EF-S small prime lens

I'm personally looking forward to having a small and light prime lens around the 30mm focal length to give a 50mm FF equivalent. I've been using the EF-S 24mm STM with my 100D for several months and have gotten good results. However, at times it just feels a little too wide.

The 40mm STM and 50mm STM are a little too narrow for the street photography that I like.

Hopefully, I won't have to wait too long. Do you all think Canon have such a lens in the pipeline anytime soon?

PS: I have used the Sigma 30mm f1.4 for a while but feel that it's too heavy and bulky. Also it's focus seems to be inconsistent.

easy choice: 35mm f2 is. Its pretty cheap, and at f2.8 there is literally no difference between this and 35L.

Re: Hoping for a 50mm equivalent EF-S small prime lens

I had been using my non-IS Canon 35/2. It paired nicely with my SL1 size and weight-wise and while not as good as the newer IS version it really worked quite well on the little camera. Eventually gave in and got the 24 pancake which isn't as close as to the 50 equivalent you desire but I like it. Hope they get you your 30 at some point.

Re: Hoping for a 50mm equivalent EF-S small prime lens

I have used the older Canon 35F2 and the new 35F2IS on full frame and crop. They are just about perfect. The new lens has faster and quieter AF, but both lenses are sharp. The new lens has excellent flare resistance.

I have the older 35F2 sitting on my T2i right now. I recommend picking up the 35F2IS, unless you are willing to wait and hope that Canon comes out with an efs version.

You can get full frame cameras for so cheap now, that you might as well go with the 50 stm on an original 5D (combo costs less than the 35 f2 is) or get a 6D for a little more. A 5D with the 50 stm would give you better quality than any lens on a 100D.

Another option is M/M2/M3/M10 and the coming 35/1.8.

Re: Hoping for a 50mm equivalent EF-S small prime lens

Hi all, thanks for taking the time to reply.

All of the suggestions given are good and practical. It has provided me with many options. But I'm most inclined to the 35mm f2 non IS as it's the cheapest and most convenient option.

I've thought about the original 5D and 50mm STM option but that would increase the total mass of the setup by a few hundred grams. The 35mm f2 IS is quite expensive over here but I know it's a great lens.

The M3 seems greatly improved over the original EOS M but it's not readily available here.

The old non-IS 35/2 is not as good as the new lenses from Canon. I sold mine solely because of this. It's not bad, but it doesn't compare to the new ones.

You might read the user reviews of this lens here and on amazon.  Yes it is not equal to the newer 35 but I was surprised how well it did perform on my SL1.  It is also noticeably smaller and lighter which to me is the main reasons I use my SL1.

35 f/2 non-IS :  7.36 oz (210 grams);  Length: 1.67 inch (42.5mm)

35 f/2 IS:        11.82 oz (335 grams); Length:  2.46 inch (62.6mm)

I got mine for $205 several years back during a Canon online store refurb sale and it has been worth the money.  That said, if you want new and IS, and are willing to pay more and don't mind the increased size and weight then the 35 IS is the way to go if you find te 40stm to long and the 24stm too wide.  Just thought you should know there is a viable alternative.

I would think you would be in line for the Canon EF 28mm f/2.8 IS USM since it's rated well.

An unreliable focus Sigma, what a surprise.

Canon 28IS and 35IS is what you want.

Good idea for another option.  Is between the Canon 35/2 and 35/2 IS in size, weight and price; is sharp and has IS; and as far as being a 50 equivalent on a crop it is off on the wide side by the same amount the 35 is on the long side.

The old 35/2 would be a poor choice IMHO. As well as the very visible difference in image quality, this lens was, until it was discontinued, one of just two left in the Canon line-up which still used the slow, very noisy 'arc-form drive' AF motor*. The new 35/2 IS has Ring USM autofocus so it's in a totally different league.

(* The only one left now is the 50 mm 'compact macro' which may never be replaced as it is a very niche product and probably not worth the investment for Canon.)

I would opt for wider, I find I really like 40mm on full frame, so long as it's as good as the 35/2,

The Canon EF 28mm f/1.8 USM has been very useful for me, some people like it, and some people don't but i've gotten some nice images with it - in low light as well as good light - and seeing as it still seems to be holding it's value there must be still something good about it. And it just looks right on the 70D and T4i - size & design - including with the hood.
