Samsung NX3000 with: a) 18-200mm lens or b) 50-200mm lens

Hi everybody,

Coming from an EOS50D to the NX3000 has been quite interesting. Loving it so far. I got confused when I got the NX3000. I assumed, wrongly, that higher numbers meant better. I did a trade for the camera in exchange for something of mine with very minimal research. Turns out it's the other way round, just like Canon.

Oh well, enough of that.

I'm looking at getting a second lens. I have the 16-50mm kit PowerZoom OIS lens at the moment. I'm really wanting to get into astrophotography. That, and epic landscape photography.

What are your opinions on the 18-200mm or 50-200mm lens? I've read that the 18-200mm is better for video, which I probably won't do any of. I'm highly limited budget wise. the 18-200mm is ZAR6999 and the 50-200mm is ZAR2900.

What do you all think? Should I bite the bullet and get the 18 or be more conservative and get the 50mm?

Thanks in advance,

James.

I do not know what zar is! Get the 50-200, you already have a 16-50, which is wider and the 2 lenses combined are probably(mostly definitely) better than the 18-200, and you will save some money that you can spend on another lens!

By the way, for astrophotography and epic landscape photography you would probably need something wider, like the 12-24(4-5.6f though), or the pancake 16mm 2.4

I don't think that F5.6 zooms are good for astrophotography.

I have 50-200 and at the long end is not even as good as Canon 55-250 IS (you may have an idea of it with 50D). 18-200 is not better and quite expensive.

I would get a distance which I need and choose an appropriate prime lens.

Hi....if you want a lense for make astrophotography and landscape....the perfect lense is Samyang 12mm f2 (manual aperture and focus)...not telelense....or maybe a 16mm with more aperture than the 16-50 PZ lense....i think tath the samsung 12-24 is perfect for landscape but not for astrophotography (f4 is not enough for stars). For stars you have to take take long exposures photos with 1200-4000 ISO...the f2 of samyang allow you take photos with less noise.

Sorry about me english

I actually went through the exact same process when I started out. I got the 16-50mm with the body and immediately wanted more range but wanted to do some astrophotography as well and the 16-50 just wasn't fast enough.

I considered the 18-200 to replace the 16-50/50-200 but I rarely saw good things said about it online. So in the end for the same price as the 18-200, I picked up the Samsung 50-200 and Samyang 12mm 2.0 which is amazing for astrophotography. I recommend doing that and I don't think you will have any regrets.

I'm probably going to try out the 10mm for astro. Just curious to see how it does. For some landscapes it is a must have lens for me. Not a daily lens but combined with the 16-50pz I manage well enough. The 10mm size makes it easy for me to hold it steady and shoot with over 1 second exposures.

Buy 50-200mm for reach and samyang 12mm f2 for astro work. Combined they cost less than 18-200mm alone.

The Rokinon (Samyang) 12mm f2 is much, much better for this than either of those alternatives. It is much sharper and faster. See the thread in this forum on this lens.

Re: Samsung NX3000 with: a) 18-200mm lens or b) 50-200mm lens

No, I agree. I refered only Samsung lenses. I mentioned that the 12-24 is slow, but that lens proposal was going to the "epic landscapes" quote, which the 12-24 is very capable to deliver. The 16mm is worst than the Samyang, but still is acceptable wide and fast for astrophotography; it is full auto, small/light for everyday use and is cheaper, more versatile than the Samyang. I always think that is a good think to have a small pancake for the 300/500 that makes the cameras ultra portable. I have the 30mm, but our friend could use the 16mm for that purpose, and astrophotography. But yes, the Samyang 12mm/2f is the better lens for astrophotography.

Dont Know the Canon but the 50-200 is very good in the 50-150 range, after that you need to stop down. The 18-200 is as sad as most of the suerzooms you Will find around For any System. Just avoid it!

I hope that Samsung Will come out with a better version at a certain Point, maybe with slight less Reach but some better quality!

Re: Samsung NX3000 with: a) 18-200mm lens or b) 50-200mm lens

Hi i test the 10mm lense on night and its work well...but the f2 vs f3.5 on night makes the difference....

10mm with fullmoon light

w10mm without moonlight

For me the 10mm is must have too...maybe less sharp (i dont know really because i no have the samyang), i love the lense...but the samyang on night has no rivals...

For landscapes, i have seen on many pictures on flickr, the samyang has maaaaany flare on shoots against the sun and city lights, and y dont buy it because that....tha samsung 12-24 has very little i think, and the 10mm too...

The perfect lense would be the samsuyang 10-24....f2....without flare and distorsion...and the wieight and size of the 10mm...:-P.

cheers!....sorry about me english

Not going to disagree with that. Just wasn't sure how much it would hit my needs. The 10 is good enough for me for now.

Currently I'm saving up for an nx1 and the 50 -150. Hopefully the rumors will drop the price.
