Mobile RAW Workflow

Hi there,

Interested in setting up a fully mobile RAW editing workflow without having to run through a computer. Am currently using the following:

Sony A6000 & LG G4

I shoot raw (ARW files) on my Sony A6000 with a microSD card and can insert into my LG G4.

Since the LG G4 can read DNG files, I should be able to convert the ARW files to DNG (using raw2dng), edit then export as JPEG all while still on the phone... no?

Re: Mobile RAW Workflow

That to me sounds horrible... editing on a phone.  Perhaps something like the Windows Surface 3 with Lightroom ? A6000 -> Surface 3, edit with LR -> export as JPG.

You don't to convert to DNG, just a RAW developper app that supports ARW, PhotoMate or PS Express come to mind. But I agree that desktop is better suited, especially at high ISO where Android apps are no match to Lightroom and similar. You might as well use the A6000 jpegs.

As you mentioned:

Convert: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.fimagena.raw2dng

Convert+Archive: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.BrainyLantern.slingShotPortfolio

Edit+Export: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.niksoftware.snapseed

So yes, you can do it but on the phone it can be little difficult because so small screen (snapseed does it very easy although).

Yes, should work. Three additional comments:

1) If you're a Lightroom on the desktop user, you could consider using Lightroom mobile for editing with the additional benefit of everything (DNGs and edits) syncing back to your desktop.

2) You might want to apply a DCP-file during DNG-conversion, since the app won't know your camera's colour profile. Not a huge difference though.

3) While I haven't tested it with the A6000, raw2dng (I'm the author) supports Sony's Wifi-transfer, so you shouldn't even have to switch your microSD card. (future version will further simplify the setup soon)

Can you please elaborate on the above? I'm not sure that I'm following here - thanks for taking the time to respond!

Many Sony cameras (to my understanding including the A6000) have a wifi-function to transfer pictures wirelessly to a laptop or smartphone.

What I meant to say is that my raw2dng app supports the wifi-transfer of RAW-files from Sony cameras directly (via an access point) to your smartphone. So you don't even have to switch your sd-card from the camera to the phone to access the pictures but can copy them wirelessly via wifi.

Hope that clarifies.

Hi,

I'm the developer of Photo Mate and one of the main targets of this app was to be a complete solution for your editing workflow. It allows you to bulk edit and store edits and convert your files later, e.g. when you're back at the charger.

However, it's true that should really use a decent tablet, I usually recommend 8" or even better 10" display.

Also, as jacosta pointed out, Luminance-Reduction is usually worse on a tablet. Photo Mate offers an Ultra mode for decent results, but you have to bear in mind that this will take several minutes per image. Mobile processors simply not that fast.

Regards

Torsten
