Converters questions

Hi, got a few questions about lens and converters that hopefully someone can help me with.

1. Can I use the Panasonic DMW-GWC1GU with the Olympus 14-42 EZ lens? If yes, must I use the Wide-Angle option in SCN-22?

2. The DMW-GWC1GU is designed for the Panasonic 14/2.5 which I also have. If I am to use this combo, do I also have to use the Wide-Angle option in SCN-22?

3. I have the Olympus MCON‑P01 which I use with the Olympus 40-150. What happens if I do not use the Macro option in SCN-23?

The reason I am asking is that it is impossible to set anything in most SCN modes. WB, ESP, ISO, etc are all fixed which is pretty annoying. I cannot even MF which is kind of pointless with macro.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Converters questions

This wide converter best fits the LUMIX G 14mm and a similar LUMIX G zoom. I use it with the 14mm on the E-M1.

I don't even know what SCN27 is, never mind have used it.

The converter turns the 14/2.5 into a quite decent, compact, and inexpensive 10.5mm f/2.5. There's a bit of barrel distortion and the corners go slightly soft wide open, but at f/5.6 the imaging performance is nearly on par with the HG Olympus ZD 11-22/2.8-3.5 ED, a lens four times the size, weight, and price (and a superb lens, I might add!).

I hardly ever take it off the 14mm.

Scene modes are always a nuisance, way too limiting, best to shoot in plain jane Aperture priority mode with suitable jpeg adjusts but also take raw files along with the jpeg. Then at leisure you can use Olympus Viewer 3 to apply Scene modes or whatever to the raw files to get a result.

In my case the Scene modes have been over-ridden by my assigned MySets so my Mode dial now looks like this with 4 MySets to handle various light conditions with suitable upper ISO limits and other adjusts like aperture, metering etc.

Then at home I grab the raw files and do what I like to them.

Usually the Wide Scene mode just adds the expected distortion correction to the results, but if a non Olympus set of lenses and/or adapters is used then it may not apply the correct correction.

I know the wide converter fits the 14 and 14-42. I already have the 14/2.5 but I do not think the converter turns it into a 11/2.5 as it reduce light by a stop or so.

But my question is can it be used with the Olympus 14-42 EZ, which the 37mm ring does fit.

Thanks. Will the Olympus Viewer Scene Mode correction correct correctly for a Panasonic wide converter on a Panasonic lens? Other than distortion, are there any other ill effects of shooting in PASM modes?

the meter registers about a third of a stop difference on my camera.

No idea, I don't own one of those .

I guess not as the correction is set for the Olympus accessory and not the Panasonic one of course. The add-on itself has no data connection so there's no way of knowing what is attached, only the base lens distortion correction can be applied as that is what the camera can talk to.

Other than distortion, are there any other ill effects of shooting in PASM modes?

The PASM modes deliver straight results determined by the camera aperture and shutter and ISO settings along with the choice of jpeg output style and offsets for Contrast, Saturation and Sharpness. The PASM modes deliver predictable results based on your adjustments, the Scene modes are basically in the hands of some guy in a white coat in Japan as to what happens to your image.

A bit like using iAuto mode, that automatically selects a suitable Scene mode by guessing what you are shooting, and if not able to guess then drops back to plain P mode. The result is that anything cam happen to your image. Two shots taken one after the other may look totally different as the firmware has decided that it wanted to use a different Scene mode for the second shot.

So for predictability and to retain user sanity, using the PASM modes makes most sense and then fine tune the jpeg or preferably the raw file later in post process to get exactly what you need from the file.
