Newer equivalent to the 330 HS

I know that's a pretty old camera by now but in its day all owners raved about it.  So much so that I've tried to buy one in the past year but for some reason or another I couldn't get it done (don't ask).

Now they're pretty much unavailable.  I used to shoot with multiple little silver Canon P&S's (check out my username) and, for some odd reason given that now I shoot with DSLRs exclusively, I long for another one.

Let's just say I'll probably never get a 330 HS.  What newer model is more-or-less equivalent?  It has to have at least a 10x optical zoom.  I've read here that Canon made a big mistake making the 330 HS so capable and dumbed down newer models.  Thanks.

Past Canons:  SD550, SD850, SD 880, SD900, SD1000 and more that I just can't think of right now.  All of which I loved shooting with but, man, that was years ago.

Re: Newer equivalent to the 330 HS

Stop by Canon's refurbed site once in a while.  They are out of stock right now; but 330HS do show up.  I bought mine for $79.99 (I just couldn't pass that up) and added a Flip-bac stick on grip.  I've had very good luck with Canon refurbs.  They come with a 1 year warranty, and all the manuals, cords, media, etc are included.  Current price is listed at $161.99; but their prices go up and down like a yo-yo.

Terrific little camera!  f/3 at 24 mm; but f/6.5 @ 240.  12 MP - later models have a longer zoom range, slower lenses, and a lot more pixels - good for advertising, bad for images.

I've had a bunch of Powershots, including most of your list.  What else is there that could stand in for the 330HS?  Not much that's newer unless you want to get into a newer series with a larger sensor.  I'm still using an S95 as I haven't seen anything newer I like better.  I liked the SD850 IS, SD870IS, and especially, the SD950IS with a very good lens and the same 1/1.7" sensor as the G9, but a limited 36-133 mm range.

You might also look for an SD4000HS.  f/2 at wide.  Doesn't make your 10x zoom range, though.

Re: Newer equivalent to the 330 HS

My favorite of all of them was the SD550 because it was the first in a long series.  I eventually wound up with three of them...at once...just in case.

But, except for the SD880, they all started at 35 or 36 and that just isn't wide enough.  Looking back at some of the pics from ALL of these cameras, I guess I took it for granted that all blue skies were actually white.  Great greens and blues, though.

Re: Newer equivalent to the 330 HS

I don't really have a problem with "only" 35 mm. In my film SLR's, I always had a 35 mm lens in the kit. I'm not really a wider angle fan, so 35 is fine for me; however, on travel, I often found I was in a place where I couldn't move to get the composition I wanted, so I grudgingly went to zoom with 28 mm at the wide end.

I had both the SD870IS and the SD880IS. I bought the latter based on Ken Rockwell's glowing review; but the SD870IS was actually the better camera. The S90 was better still, so I said goodbye to both and later updated the S90 to the S95, for a negligible improvement.

I am truly amazed at how good the S90/95 is. Good dynamic range, really excellent color, and with the Franiec grip, great handling. It's my dinner camera, and goes along on travel as both a backup and as the pocket camera, paired with the FZ1000. The FZ1000 is an excellent camera and has completely replaced my Canon 70D, lenses, and flashes. The FZ1000 can wirelessly control off-camera flash using the built in flash, so it has even taken over my portrait and group shot work.

During Spring Break in 2016, my 330HS is going to Europe with my grandson for a French Club trip to Paris, Rome, and Madrid. He has a smart phone; but I'd love to turn him to the light side.

I think I finally own one
1

After I put up this thread I stumbled upon a 330 HS on ebay with not much time left (the next morning, early). My bid won so I finally get to put one of these through its paces. I'll be comparing it mostly to my Nikon J1.

Of course, I was this close before to having one but one thing or another happened to thwart delivery so I'll report back when I actually have it in my hands!

Congrats on the find.

I was going to suggest looking at the new Panasonic ZS50.  Can see the CameraLabs ZS50 Review HERE. Like the 330 HS the ZS50 uses a 1/2.3" 12MP sensor.

Re: Newer equivalent to the 330 HS

I bought a used SD880 IS  from a friend back in 2010 . It started to act up really weird recently but it seem to have regained it senses . I love it and was worried what I was gonna replace it with .

Bought the ZS50 and sold it. My ELPH 330HS was the better camera, though with less reach.

I mentioned the ZS50 in regards to the OP's initial post and the topic of this thread;
"Newer equivalent to the 330 HS"

AFAIK all the newer pocket superzoom cameras currently in production the ZS50 the only current pocket superzoom that uses a 1/2.3" sensor and 12MP, opposed to 18-20+ MP of the other current pocket superzoom cameras.

Re: Newer equivalent to the 330 HS

I've alluded to how it's been impossible for me to actually get one of these in my hands.  Well, I do actually have the camera in my hands...but no battery.  Never had that happen before.  The ebay listing showed a battery included.  Oh well.

I'll get back to you when I've actually used this camera.

I know you're all waiting for the results of my test drive of my "new" 330
1

Sorry, keep waiting.  The seller said "sorry" and that he sent the battery to me but I don't have it yet.  I could have waited forever for it to arrive or just buy one.  But...not available locally.  So I ordered a couple of ebay batteries plus generic charger that will arrive next week.

Why get another charger?  For all I know the charger I got with the camera doesn't work.  For all I know the camera doesn't work.  Next week I may have answers.
