thanks Colin, interesting to hear that your experience with this is similar to mine

"though the last one, not quite sure what's going on there."

It was a sequence of images I took trying to make something different from a long-haul race (3 laps of 15 miles each) during which the teams had to make one pit stop.

I decided to play "Catch the critical moment" as each crew came ashore and that shot was an example of one of the more extrovert processes, when the crew leapt out of the boat before it stopped.

A few more to give you a better idea of what was going on

here's another, trying to run on water

and another coming to a dead stop (just before doing a "face plant" )

this was how they wanted to do it!

Thanks for that Brian I was also wondering what the fellow in the last photo was doing

"secondly shutter speed to freeze the water means being left with not a lot of DOF." Not an argument. Why isn't it possible with FF? Just increase ISO. Advantage certainly is a smaller kit you can have with you.

Not impossible with FF, just more difficult. Don't like what my Canons did to the shadow detail at 800 and higher. In a lot of these shots the DR is pretty high, and I usually need to pull the shadows out a bit. I would have had to shoot this at 1600 ISO on the 5D, and that just doesn't have the same IQ.

Yeah, the older Canons aren't that nice here. With newer models like 6D, 5diii or the Nikons no problem at all.

To be honest I'm not sure the newer models have improved that much - even at 800 ISO on the 5D3 I didn't have to pull the shadows too much before I'd start to see pattern noise and/or banding - it was a bit of a revelation to find how much more tolerant the Oly files were.

The iso capabilities of a 6d are excellent, DR at base ISO is not a strength, however. But one to two stops doesn't impose extreme difficulty with newer Canons, at least not with a scene as the one in the above example. The Nikons with their Toshiba/Sony sensors have no problem at all delivering the performance required.

Agreed that the Sony sensors are excellent in this respect, and I'm not saying Canons are a huge problem, but taken all together, I prefer the output of my EM-1 at 400 over my 5Diii at 1600 by quite a margin. As for the 7D (original) ... well that was truly disappointing at anything over 200 ISO.

I can assure you, selling off all my Canon gear to switch to m43 was no spur of the moment decision - I guess I spent a year comparing side by side (initially with an EM-5) before deciding. There are pros and cons on both sides, and I dare say could well be unique to the way I shoot and my choice of subjects.

"good to see the Oly stuff is working for you "

The relief when they resolved my muscle wasting problems (one of the prescribed drugs I was on started reacting very badly with my system) was only matched by the delight when my lovely wife OK'd my re-purchasing my Olympus Pro kit, it was like getting back in touch with an old friend

still sticking with the 1 system here, got a J5 which is really good. Think i'm going to wait as i am hoping one day theses AF adaptors will make it easy to use whichever lenses on a mirrorless body of your choice with no handicap....i can dream
