Canon Camera Connect vs DSLR Controller?

I am the happy new owner of a 760D, having started withh a 300D and upgraded a few times over the years.

The prospect of remote shooting over WiFi was one of the drawcards. I have being using DSLR Controller with the hacked TPLink pocket WiFi router and thought of using it with built in WiFi was very appealing.

It works quite well, after some predicted issues with initial connection. Strangely my newer Galaxy S5 doesn't work as well as an older Galaxy Tab 7, but the larger screen of the tablet it better anyway.

A couple of annoyances, both Canon related I think. Firstly the connection is lost every time you change mode on the camera. Canon's explanation is that on camera controls "have priority" over WiFi control, not an issue with tge TPLink interface though. Secondly, I think that there mught be a fair bit of unnecessary loss of remote control functionality with WiFi remote compared to USB remote, according to Canon, for performance reasons.

Which brings me to Canon Camera Connect. It runs on the iPad, which means I wouldn't have to take tye Galaxy Tab with me as well as the iPad on trips. My impression though is that it has less functionality than DSLR Contoller. I can't find any documentation on it either. I only discovered by accident, for example, that double tapping seems to zoom in on live view.

Features lacking, compared to DSLR Controller, seem to me to include manual (more correctly remote) focus control, zoom level button and, I think, greater access to general camera functions, though still restricted by the camera firmware. Camera Connecr does have an optional focus button which I like.

Comments, afvice, tips welcome.

I guess three days with no replies means there's no-one here can help you. You might find more people in the 7D / 10D - 70D forum who have played around with that kind of stuff.

Thanks, I had concluded that this was not the right forum. In the meantime, I have played around with both applications and I definitely think that DSLR Controller beats Canon Camera Connect. Either will do the job, and the Canon offering has a better looking, UI but DSLR Controller offers better functionality in my opinion.

I don't have a WiFi enabled camera so I've never tried CCC. I've installed DSLR Controller and Helicon Remote but not got around to actually doing something serious with them. It's good that we have some choice.

What do you mean with focus control? As you state, EOS Remote and Canon Camera Connect offer a focus button in the app.

They offer ISO, aperture and exposure time control, AF area control and zooming in to check for focus.

Not sure for what reason one would want to level of zooming in?

DSLR Controller has  manual focus buttons, 2 each (up/down) for coarse, medium and fine steps. The lens has to be set to auto focus for this too work. You can zoom in on an area to see in more detail hiw sharp tge focus is.

There's nothing like a picture. Notice on the left margin, towards the top, there is a button named R-MF, Remote Manual Focus. The toggled value for this is AF, Auto Focus. On the right hand side notice the 10x button indicating 10 times zoom. Accross the top are the coarse, medium and fine focus buttons, <<< << < > >> >>>.

Also a new owner of the 760D and trying to establish a wireless remote connection with my S4 phone.  I tried the Canon EOS app but it referred me to the newer Canon Connect app. I can connect but the connection fails before I can start the app.  What am I doing wrong?  Does my home Wi-Fi overpower the Canon and replace it?

The secret seems to be to use Camera Access Point (CAP) mode on the camera. This is done in the WiFi menu on the camera. You can set up connections to up to 3 devices this way. When you first do it, the camera will display a "paasword" and wait for you to connect your device (the S4).

Go to the normal WiFi set up on the phone, you should see the camera listed. Use the password when you connect. Once the connection is established, the Canon Connect app should work.

It took me quite a few attempts to figure all this out but it is now quite routine. For future connections you still go to the WiFi set up the phone (assuming that you have switched some other network in the meantime) but you won't need to enter the paasword.

Canon Connect works but I am beginning to think that DSLR Controller is better. One nice feature (on DSLR Controller) is remote manual focussing. You leave the camera/lens on auto focus and use buttons on the phone screen for coarse, medium and fine focus. You can zoom 5x or 10x to anywhere on the screen while focussing. The app must somehow trigger the shutter release without triggering autofocus.

There is another app called Heilcon, but I haven't tried it yet.

An anoying "feature" is that WiFi disconnects every time the camera mode is changed and you  to reconnect. Cant n claims that this is because manual controls have priority over WiFi. I think it's just poor implementation.

Over all, it works quite well.
