G5X vs RX100 IV poll

In Korea, poll shows RX100 IV leading more than 3 to 1 even though G5X has not been released

Let's see how this will change once the G5X is in people's hands

What's your vote and why?

Cheers,

Re: G5X vs RX100 IV poll

They each have their advantages- the G5x has a fully articulating touch screen, longer zoom, likely more usable evf, cheaper, etc., while the rx100iv (such stupid naming convention) has faster performance, better video, smaller size, better battery life, etc.

While the differences may have something to do with brand popularity where the survey is being taken, I think it also demonstrates the market for these models. Both are quite high end compacts, meaning they will appeal to serious hobbyists, enthusiasts and that sort. I think those types of people aren't willing to have a 1" cam as their go to gear, so these cameras are backups for many users. For that purpose, compact size and convenience probably trumps bells and whistles. For that reason I would imagine the g7x or g9x would stand a better chance in the polls, even if they are "downgrades" from the g5x.

Re: G5X vs RX100 IV poll

As Sony's Alpha 7 line demonstrates, proper cameras have viewfinder that are fixed and centered, like the Canon G5 X.

My impression is that Canon is known for writing better menu systems than Sony.

Some people complain that Sony cameras have overly aggressive noise reduction.

The Sony doesn't have a touch screen, which is kind of backwards.

The Canon has a lower suggested retail price.

As for Neither:

For people who value pocketability, the Canon G9 X is 25% thinner and weighs 30% less than the Sony RX 100 IV, and costs much less.

Personally I look at the G5X and RX100 IV as two different types of cameras.

The RX100 IV is a High-end pocketable compact, whereas the G5X is a Enthusiast compact camera.

Hence if looking for an update for my:

  • S110; I'd be looking/ comparing the RX100 III vs. the G9X. (for myself the RX100 IV improvements not worth the additional $$$ over the RX100 III).
  • G15; I would chose the G5X over the RX100 III or IV, or the G7X.

Hopefully with the G5X's slightly larger size over the G7X , Canon was able to improve the G5X's corner sharpness compared to the G7X.

For me, this is size vs touchscreen. If you had a gun to my head, I'd take the Sony.

I'd take G7X or G9X over either of these.

G5x for me.

I've been using the G12 since release and until now Canon have not releases a like for like replacement.

I have a very busy ebay store and take hundreds of pictures in my home studio per week, 90% are from the hip and in portrait orientation, therefore a flip-out fully articulating screen AND a hot-shoe for my speedlites are both essential features.

The sony has neither.

For the record you may be interested to hear that my trusty Canon G12 has taken around 1/4 of a million pictures and is still going strong - although the outer body has worn smooth through hand holding

I'll be getting the GX5 asap

G5X has no tilt flash. So Flash hurts and blinds.

For me, its shooting video or photo.
Details saying that too
For instance;
Rx100m4 Has: Super Slow motion video
G5X Has: Better located viewfinder and a grip, like a ideal camera

Most other cameras of this genre the SMALL built-in flash does not tilt. Besides the G5 X has a hot shoe so one can even use the little 270EX II and have FAR better flash results than any built-in flash, plus with an external flash not going to be draining the camera's batteries.

No big surprise there, just as the RX100 III lens better than the RX100 and RX100 II.

Or that the 24-70mm range would have better sharpness than a 24-1xxmm. Just as with the top Canon / Nikon Pro DSLR lenses are limited to around a 3x zoom range; e.g., 24-70mm.

A few years back Ken Rockwell did a good article on "Lens Sharpness" with items to keep in mind when doing pixel peeping image comparisons.

+1.  It is the size of the RX100 line combined with the features and overall performance that makes it such a great series of cameras.    If you don't need a camera that small then there are many other options that you might consider including the G5X.    I have the original RX100 and when I decide to replace it I would be looking at a camera similar in size like the latest RX100xx or G9X.
