K3II lens mount bent! Viagra won't help this one

Had my K3II+DA300 in a lowepro top loader & strap broke, fell only about 40cm to a wood floor--yet this!!  Anyone been out for a similar accident & can it be fixed? for a reasonable price,as K3II is low in price these days.  Thanks for any help

same thing happened to my K-3, which I had repaired by Precision for $300. Frankly, I am shocked at how poorly these "all magnesium" bodies react to a small fall. Nothing like my old Nikons or Leicas. Why have a magnesium body but make the mounting plate screws attach to PLASTIC?? (yes, plastic).

I hesitate to ask... yet I am drawn to know -- Does Viagra aid in your other camera repairs?

Oh $300 then here in Europe probably more!

as I use the 150-450 mostly, I had noticed the mount was getting a bit loose, maybe that didn't help when it fell..

My K5II with DA300 has been through alot ,and never any problems..wonder if they are using'cheaper ' materials on the K3II series??

Don't do many 'camera' repairs..I'm a tech for musical instruments-- the long ones  like flutes etc..

This may be an optimistic guess, but perhaps the screws are designed to be the break point to head off worse damage in this kind of fall.

Depending were the accident happened, check your household insurance for coverage; or did the car accidentially run over it?

Can see now only 1 screw bushing is slightly stripped, since its carbon fiber & plastic, epoxy or a lite cured material should work.Ring is very hard to straighten,as bent in 2 places.Wonder if I can get a new from Ricoh,or?? if anyone know here to get parts please let me know...

Re: K3II lens mount bent! Insurance won't help this one?

Sorry to hear of your accident,

Just a thought on repair....  Pretty sure you won't be able to get the part direct, but as far as I can tell, the mount plate is the same going back as far as the k20/k10.  Definitely the front profile looks the same (screws in the same place etc.)

Could you pick up a old/broken early camera (they tend to go for peanuts on ebay) and just use the mount plate off it?  Should be a much cheaper repair option.

Problems I see here are that maybe the depth of the plate has changed?  I can't find a profile picture of the mounts so can't tell.  BUT there are members here with older cameras so maybe they would chime in and give you some measurements????

Hope you sort it out, good luck.

Regards,

Michael.

Yes my cats got a bit wild ,oh but then you needed animal insurance

if guests did it I think I may be covered, will find out on that--as I pay enough to them(insurance co. ) & never use it

or I can say a 'Canon' user tried it,got so upset a the great quality compared to his Canon ,that he threw it against a wall

That simply means that K-3 and K-3 I are not professional class models but consumer class models. The market clearly shows it with adjusted pricing. A K-3 new body price is very close to a new K-S2 (a consumer camera aided camera) body price.

Do not take my statement wrong - I am planning to purchase K-3 (or modest K-S2) by end of the year.

Or, if it isn't legally covered by your insurance, you can just pay for it out of pocket like any other decent person and not even consider insurance fraud with a made up story.

So are you questioning my decency? maybe question the ethics of insurance companies& lawyers who have corrupted the whole system, esp. in the states.

Re: K3II lens mount bent! Viagra won't help this one

Congratulations!  No need to buy a tilt lens for those special effects !

Actually, very sorry to hear about your mishap.  The suggestion of finding an old low cost Pentax camera and trying a DYI mount ring exchange sounds like it might be worth a try.

Good luck,

Daryl

Wow! Metal ring is screwed to plastic body. I wonder how Nikon does it. Or Canon for that matter.

Re: K3II lens mount bent! Viagra won't help this one

The level of force required to bend brass mount is massive (as your aware if you've tried to straighten it) the fact the other screw held under such a wrenching is very surprising I'd have expected the mount to rip off under that forces rather than bend.

The other big surprise is your da*300 didn't tear in half as it has designed weakness to protect the mount, You can google for any number of split da*'s

I guess it landed at just the right angle to do maximum damage

The biggest concern for self repair is not getting a new mount (I think most modern film cameras off ebay will fit) But he high likely hood the calibration is shot on the mount stands and also the damage done tot eh da*300 physical mount alignment and optical .

Personally I'd get a cheapo replacement mount bolt it on and attempt to calibrate AF with a known working lens then try the da*300 and hope my luck holds.

As their bodies are plastic you can bet how they do it, The assumption that pastic is the wrong material for this is based on cheap toys.

Plastic is temperature stable and therefore the ideal material fro tolerance critical joint i.e Lens barrel runners , Mounts etc etc

You could argue on what quality of plastic is used but the use of plastics is critical for the quality images people expect under all temperatures from their cameras.

Update from Pentax repair tech..

ring is same as K7,K5,K5II,K3 models new ring about $200

maybe the AF module can be out of adjustment he said-but not so $$ to fix

screws on ring are glued with superglue

I will try the ring from my K5II, and see if AF is ok & rest of functions

if any alignment/registration distance is needed, it is done with the sensor(not a DIY possibility ,))

& he has NO info at all on the new FF
