Good value for money
1

Although I would have liked an even more compact & lightweight standard FF kit zoom lens (ie 24-70 f/3.5-5.6 VR) to accompany my D750, I must admit this one is really good value for money. It is very sharp throughout the whole focal range, only when zooming all the way in at 85mm it looks a bit soft when wide open, but still very sharp when stopped down two stops. AF is simply fast. Distortion (after in camera correction) is acceptable, but not 100% perfect as can be expected from a zoom lens at this price tag. It handles great lens flares & ghosts and produces very decent sunstars when completely stopped down to f/22. I see only minor CA issues and purple/green fringing, the remaining part is easily corrected in post. VR works great. So nothing really disturbing about this lens. Care should be taken with the filters however. No stacking of filters is possible at the wide end. Even with one filter, you're on the "edge" and when using a polarizer outdoors you can already see some light falloff on the edges. So when used with care, as a all-round walk around lens, this is currently the best lightweight zoom for Nikon FF bodies.

Reads better than a 3.5 thanks for sharing though.

I've actually just bought this myself, have only been out with it once but first impressions are similar to your own.  Bit more compact than the 24-120 f4 but with seemingly comparable IQ.

Re: Good value for money

I use it on D7100 outdoors (nature, landscapes, etc., with a CPL Filter). It has been my go to lens for outings this summer. I bought a refurb at less than half the price of new one, and I like it. In fact, I have some nightshots at ISO 400 at theme park and they turned out very good.

I have seen complaints from FF users about lack of sharpness away from the center, but that's not an issue for me on DX.

I agree, the lens is excellent on FX but it is a killer on DX. Look at the blur charts in the review at SLRGear.com and compare to any other zoom lens.
