Neither will be great for low light without flash. You need the biggest sensor and fastest lens you can manage, considering the better you get the larger and more expensive the cameras get.

Right now, the Canon g7x is about the best you can get for a small, reasonably priced camera if photo quality is your main concern. It has a much bigger sensor and much faster lens (though less zoom than your camera), and the photos in low light will be far, far better. It goes for around $599.

If you care a lot about video or want something a little cheaper, the older Sony rx100 (the first one) is a good choice. The results won't be quite as good when zoomed in, but you can probably find one of these around $400. The Canon g16 is another option if you want a little more zoom and can sacrifice some image quality, also around $400.

Keep in mind these cameras give up some zoom for their better image quality, so you need to have some decent seats to get real closeup shots!

I agree 100% with rpm40 to go for the G7X. I have a few P&S cameras with 1/2.3 sensors and bought the G7X specifically for low light work. But I now find I am using it more and more for daylight as well.

G1X mark 1 or 2 will both significantly outperform all the current line up for low light performance and at reasonable cost though not as good zoom.

I agree with ghce re: the G1X re: the original. I have used it a lot on trips in cathedrals and museums and can't fault the IQ in low light. Here are a couple of links to images shot with it, both in museums and outdoors  in Paris, and in  Rome museums, churches and some outdoors.

and here are some shot in St. Peters and a few other interiors in Rome, and outdoors at night:

Hope this helps!

Re: link to 2 galleries shot with G1X original

As a few have mentioned, the G1X and G1Xii are good options as well, though a little larger, and generally, a little pricier. Also, The g7x and rx100 are generally considered to be on par with these cameras for low light shooting, as their smaller sensors are newer and have been tested to be pretty comparable in image quality.

That said- here is a deal for you- Canon G1X refurbished direct from Canon for $269, great price! They even toss in a free 4gb card

Keep in mind, 4x zoom, not the best autofocus in the world, and probably not as good in low light as the g7x or g1xii when zoomed in, but you're talking less than half the price of those models, so if budget is top of your list, it is worth considering for sure.

EDIT: Actually, all the Canon refurbs are on sale again, just check this link:

G16 for $299, g7x for $499, g1xii for $599. All great options.

Maximum Apertures: The Elph 500 HS has an f/2 lens whereas the sx500 has a very long zoom but has an f/3.5 aperture.
.
For this reason, the Elph 500 HS has the faster lens which would be much better in low light.  But it has a small sensor and this is what will limit your photography in low light situations.
.

5x Vs 30x optical zoom shows that these are two very different cameras.
.
If you are serious about lowlight photography, you will find that a larger sensor size will result in far more sensitivity to light.  For this reason you should really consider a 1" or 1.5" sensor instead.  For ultimate non-DSLR sensitivity, an APS-C sized sensor is the way to go.
.
Without going to a DSLR, your best results in low light will be from these Canon cameras:

  • Canon EOSM Mirrorless + f/2 pancake lens with APS-C sized sensor.
  • Canon PowerShot G1X (any version) with 1.5" sensor.
  • Canon Powershot G7X or G9X with 1" Sensor.

I shoot in low light almost exclusively and use an EOS-M, a G1X and am about to buy the G9X.  I wrote the list above without even realizing that this was not just the best lowlight alternatives for you but for me also.  Like you, I don't like to shoot with a flash but prefer natural light whenever possible.
.
If budget is a deciding factor, I would try to obtain the camera with the fastest lens out of the two you mentioned.  However, a 30x optical zoom is quite a desirable thing in itself.  Of course the size of that camera is much larger as well.
