Connecting Rebel T2i to computer

I have just purchased a second hand EOS 550D Rebel T2i and didn't receive the EOS Digital Solution disk with the camera or any cables for connections.

I am having difficulty downloading any photos to computer.

Is there a special interface cable  that you need to use or will any USB cable be OK. The computer won't recognise my camera when it is connected. Comes up with error message " The last USB device you connected to this computer malfunctioned and Windows does not recognise it"

I am running Windows10 Pro

I have downloaded EOS Utility and Digital Photo Professional.

I have formatted the card on the camera.

Can anyone help please?

See if there's an option for computer connection and change it to PTP protocol, and if it's already on that setting try the other one.

Hi Tammar,

If your computer has an inbuilt Card Reader, many laptops have these, you can take your SDHC card out of the 550D and plug it straight into your computer and copy the photo's over to your computer.

If your computer doesn't have a card reader these can be purchased separately and only cost a few £/$.

Re: Connecting Rebel T2i to computer

I don't own the camera, but it looks like the interface cable is a USB A to Mini B cable. They should be pretty cheap (i.e. about the same price as a bad tasting hamburger) if you get it from a place that sells all the other types of computer cable.

According to the manual, the camera also has to be on and in the image viewing mode for the USB to work. (In other words, plug the camera and computer together while there's a previously-taken image showing on the LCD screen on the back - that's what I needed to do on my old Sony DSLR to get it to talk to the computer.)

Whether there is an image present or not the Operating System should recognize the camera as a storage device. I'm not familiar with Windoes 10 and as such would suggest that you follow the advice to get yourself a card reader as going this route will help conserve your batteries.

Does your laptop have an SD card reader built into it?

For example, many HP and Apple laptops have an SD card reader.  I have the same camera and I pull the SD card out after taking pictures and put the card directly into my laptop and access the pictures using this method - much easier.

The USB error you received typically is caused by:

bad cable

damaged USB port (whether on camera or computer)

The first action I'd suggest is trying a new cable. Some cables do not have data channels so you should definitely make sure it does. Other than that, try several ports on the target computer (in the event one has a malfunction).

Firstly the EOS Utility should automatically kick in when the camera is connected and that utility should handle all the downloads and other features.

Did you download the full Canon software suite from an official Canon site eg: https://www.canon.co.uk/support/ if you are in the UK?

There used to be an issue with the Canon software if the camera had already been attached via USB before the software was installed but I don't know if this is still the case and I am going back a few years.

No special USB cable is required.  I don't believe Canon cameras are seen as mass USB storage so that route probably won't work.  If the EOS Utility won't work then you'll have to use an SD card reader.  Canon's ImageBrowser will download from a card reader and keep track of what is new and what is yet to be downloaded though other freely available software will as well.

All good points. Same thing I was thinking.
