Oops, I bought a 40-150 f2.8 + TC

I figured with the 300f4 being quite late, I'd just say 'sod it' and buy the 40-150 combo. I had a think about it and decided the 40-150 might be quite versatile, as for some trips I could take it rather than the 75 f1.8 and 75-300 (approximately the same weight).

I'm hoping to get out on the kayak this summer too, so a weather sealed tele will be very useful.

Can't wait for it to get here.

A wonderful choice Martin.

I recall when I purchased my 40-150. It was January and I remember going online to shop for some warm socks, except when I woke up there was a receipt in my e-mail tray for the lens. I have no idea how it got there, but I immediately forgot about it. Then a week later a large box arrived - and it was so lovely to use that I promptly forgave my hand for slipping on the keyboard on the fateful day when I accidentally spent a huge sum of money.

Definitely versatile because it's beautiful for portraits and of course very good for nature photography with the TC. I'm sure you will love it and I'll look forward to seeing the results. I will say that it is an incredibly sharp lens - perhaps a little too sharp for my tastes, but very impressive. That said, I still kept my Pana 100-300 because the extra reach can be very handy at times.

Will definitely keep an eye out for some future posts! I heard the tc softens things up a little? Just a technicality I guess and if it's a super sharp lens it may not matter? I like walking around my local woods and national park and wildlife / nature has become a big part of what I enjoy the most. So you reckon it's a good combo for that?

The 100-300 is very compact and light for its 600mm eq. reach.  body + lens is about 2 lbs. That was most welcome on a recent trip where most of our wldlife photos were taken on crowded river cruises or from our car.

Re: Oops, I bought a 40-150 f2.8 + TC

You might be surprised at its quick reflexes, I know I was. Of my native m4/3 lenses it focuses on par with the 12-40 and perhaps a product of the longer focal lengths appears to be even faster, as the transition from OOF to focused is abrupt. Nothing else in my kit comes close. Because of the internal zoom it retains the balance center on zooming, which for me negates any heft disadvantage. And on that topic, since it's a partial substitute for my 35-100 SHG it seems like that lens' skinny little brother-a little fellow.

I don't have the MC14 but from what I see from Vass and others, it's a great addition and I wouldn't hesitate to add it.

Enjoy!

Rick

ETA agree with the above that it's a good portrait lens.

I've been thinking that the 40-140 f2.8 might make the world's best butterfly lens.

Good thinking - have fun with it.

I found that i can take the 40-150/2.8 with me in either my sling bag or my mind shift panorama. And indeed since i have the lens i have carried it around quite a bit. I doubt that you will do that with the 300f4.

Never underestimate the power of the words "sod it".

I would be terrified!

A weather sealed lens means that the chance the lens breaks when there is a bit of moisture is lower than with a non-sealed lens. But if it breaks, don't count on any weather sealing warranty! They will always say the wetness was excessive. I have read this many times here and elsewhere.

I would be terrified going out in a kayak with any expensive gear, weather sealed or not. If the kayak tips over, good luck!

The 40-150 f/2.8 is an excellent lens and the TC is great too. I'm very happy with them but I would never ever take them for a spin in any environment where there is a risk of them getting really wet.

I generally don't capsize kayaks. Also, my kayaking experience also includes shallow water bathymetry with thousands of dollars of gear on board. I'm used to having a degree of risk while paddling.

Excellent decision.

Look forward to your bird shots, especially those swallow in flight!

Be interested in your opinion on the lens when you have had some experience using it.

I find it a pleasure to use with really impressive results.

Cheers

GREAT rationalization! I mean, seriously. Excellent.

And no doubt the built-in floaties will be a help when you capsize! LOL!

Have fun!

Well, that wasn't the only rationalisation, I have more.

I am kinda impressed I held out this long though, as it's also ideal for my indoor sports.

Mostly though I blame Dennis and Vass. They've been posting too many bird photos with that combo.
