Canon in-camera battery charging option with G5 X / G9 X (and some others)
2

Checking the Canon`s official website, I noticed one of the recommended accessories being the "Compact Power Adapter CA-DC30", description stating:

An alternative option for charging the battery in the PowerShot G5 X and G9 X models. Plugs into standard wall outlet and works with Canon Interface Cable IFC-600PCU or with a standard Micro-USB to USB cable.

A quick search brought me to a page describing how it`s used (for PowerShot N, though) -- link, and it really seems to be an alternative option to charge the battery while still being inside the camera (what Sony RX-100 has by default, for example).

Now, while I do prefer a separate/standalone battery charger (what Canon usually ships anyway), mostly because I can charge one battery while using the other, I think this in-camera charging is a really nice option to have, especially for people who prefer it, but it could come in handy at occasions for all the others as well.

I`ll see to do some search for myself a bit later, but in the meantime, has anyone used this charging option so far, and do you know for how long it has been out there and which camera`s support it (except PowerShot N, G5 X and G9 X)?

Did you manage to find more info about this item? I recently bought a G5 X and was looking for a way to not run out of battery power before I came across the CA-DC30 charger. While it says you can charge via USB cable connected to a wall socket, I am really looking info regarding charging it via a USB 8,000mAh battery pack that I current use for my mobile phone, and if supported, how long can I expect to wait for a drained battery to full charge.

It will depend on current of the power bank. Not sure about G5X charger, but G7X charger is .75A. Many power banks are .5A. So looking at about 80min with stock wall charger vs 2+ hours with .5A power bank.

I have two battery packs: one outputs 2.4A and 1.5A while another outputs at 2.1A.

What confuses me is the cable that Canon recommends to work with this charger (or not) IFC-600PCU http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/71oVA5tEeHL._SL1500_.jpg, the micro-USB connector end seems to fit the camera interface (for image/video transfers) rather than for the purpose of charging. I like how the charger end uses bigger Type A plug (more robust than Type C Micro-USB).

You can use any micro USB cable. It's the same port as the data transfer port...like a modern mobile..

Wow, those are some powerful banks. Pushing juice. 2.4A? I'm guessing the batteries will not allow more than 1A. You can test though, if battery accepting 2.4A, should charge fully in 30 min flat. I doubt that'll be the case though.

The 2.4A power bank is made by APC

I have an AC Adapter Kit ACK-DC110 that charges while camera is in use. You can also convert it to charge off a USB port.  There are several threads about this, the one in the Sony forum is the most detailed, also G7X/G5X and  RX100 batteries have the same capacity. I've posted in the Sony thread, but can't locate ATM.

I found the threads where you discussed at length ways to power the camera using an external power source. All that I'm interested in is the possibility to charge NB-13L battery using a smartphone battery pack. I now have a total of 3 batteries that should give me many hours of use.
