Looks nice.

If this camera matches the Sony RX100 IV in video features it could be a smash hit.

Does not match it.

I disagree. They are covering the whole gamut. Who cares if you buy g7x instead of g5x, they still got your dough.

This camera looking awesome. At that price though, I think I'd go with g7x and the longer, brighter lens. Let's see what gray market is.

In the no-so distant past, Canon had too many cameras of a similar type on the shelves at once.  What happens then there are too many "similar" cameras available from the one manufacturer is that customers will be momentarily confused.  Then, they will commence looking at alternative brands.  The brand with the fewer choices tends to get the sale.  When Canon discovered this was the case, they stripped one camera from every series they were producing to cut down the number on display.

Really, any data to back that?

Canon Has Learned ...Use A Sony Sensor

Sony has made itself into the go to brand for most (not all) excellent sensors so they win whether you purchase a Sony branded camera or one from many other brands.

Re: Canon G9 X - $530 - limited rear buttons

I like the size of this camera. It is the slimmest 1" sensor camera available and therefore more pocketable than G7X or Sony RX cameras.

The control layout doesn't thrill me. You are going to have to do everything thru the touch interface. Canons touch interface is good, but not perfect. A simple directional controller on back would be nice.

Would have loved some dedicated way of controlling exposure compensation. Maybe G7X stacked exp comp/mode dial. I would even get rid of the mode dial ala the original M and used the space of the mode dial for dedicated exposure compensation. I change exp comp way more than I change camera modes.

Overall an interesting camera that has a nice niche for those looking for more IQ than 1/1.7" cameras give while making it very pocketable.

Lets just hope they haven't screwed the whole thing up by making it an experiment in user control interface.
