High Detail, Even in Low Light
1.0-inch, 20.2 Megapixel* High-Sensitivity CMOS Sensor
At 1.0 inch, the image sensor on the PowerShot G9 X camera is larger than the ones on most other compact cameras. This allows it to capture a greater range of light, so bright areas of the image, like clouds on a sunny day, can be more detailed and less likely to be washed or blown out. With low-light scenes, like when you’re indoors or outside at night, an ISO range of 125–12800 lets you use fast shutter speeds to help keep photos sharp and virtually unaffected by camera shake. The 20.2 Megapixel* resolution is outstandingly high, giving you the option of printing out bigger photos or cropping in to highlight the best part.

Clear Photos in Almost Every Light
3x, f/2.0–4.9 Optical Zoom Lens (28–84mm)
The PowerShot G9 X camera has an impressive zoom lens with a remarkable optical zoom range, helping you capture wide shots like a big party scene or a gorgeous canyon, or enabling you to zoom in and get a wonderful close-up. The fast aperture goes as low as f/2.0, meaning it’s possible to see the subject and take clear photos in low light, often without a flash. Combined with Intelligent IS image stabilization, it helps to ensure virtually shake-free images, even in dark rooms or outside at night.

Slim and Stylish
At only 7.37 ounces (209g), the PowerShot G9 X is a compact camera that’s not much bigger than a deck of cards, and can easily fit into a pocket or purse. Despite its size, it packs a large, high-quality image sensor and fast f/2.0 lens. These work together with features such as the DIGIC 6 processor to help create high quality photos, even in low light. This means you can have a camera within easy reach that’s able to deliver detailed images that show the texture of clothing fabric, the colors of a sunset or the moment a player kicks a ball at the goal.

Intuitive User Interface
The 3.0-inch touch panel is designed to take advantage of both hands while holding the camera so you can make adjustments while still being ready to snap a photo. The menus are customizable, meaning the settings you adjust frequently are easily accessible. You’re also able to swipe quickly through photos you’ve taken, and tap the screen to easily adjust picture options and change what the camera is focusing on. In addition, the control ring around the lens can be rotated with your fingers to make adjustments to various settings, simplifying the process even further.

Intuitive Controls
Control Ring and Touch Panel
Quick, simple adjustments are ideal when you’re trying to capture the great moments in life. The PowerShot G9 X camera uses a combination of a responsive, 3.0-inch touchscreen and a smoothly rotating control ring around the lens. Your right thumb can pick the setting you’d like to change, and then your left fingers can rotate the control ring to adjust it, all without lowering the camera or taking your finger off the shutter. For example, if you’re trying to capture a dog playing in the sun, you can quickly adjust the shutter speed with a tap of the menu and a twist of the control ring to get the amount of detail you desire, while keeping a bit of blur to show action.

Looks nice.

If this  camera matches the Sony RX100 IV in video features it could be a smash hit.

Unlikely to have 4K video, but the 1080p60 video should be nice as usual.

This camera is too small to have all the buttons. The G9X is going to be for people who want a 1 inch sensor in a tiny pocket camera. G9X weighs about 25% less than a G7X.

Yea that's what I dont understand. The camera is 2mm narrower (98mm vs 100.2mm) than the S120 which has a rear wheel (5 buttons) and 4 additional buttons, both have a 3" touchscreen lcd, yet this only has 4 buttons? I just find it kind of backwards, that's all.

Probably because of the 3:2 sensor aspect ratio versus the 4:3 on the S120. They had create some real estate if they wanted the picture to fill out the height of the screen.

How would you do exposure compensation on this camera?

Looking at the pictures, I think that is my only question.

I'm noticing that there are no directional cursor buttons, so I'm assuming a lot is going to happen with the touch screen.

This looks like a potent pocket camera. 1" sensor. f2 at the wide end.

Is that a dial around the lens?

Price seems reasonable / fair. (I guess hoping for bargain bin pricing is always wishful thinking.)

Take care & Happy Shooting!

From the description, it will have a smooth rotating lens ring, instead of one with that clicks, like the the current g7x and s series cameras. So I'm guessing they reworked part of the touchscreen UI so that you can quickly switch between settings. Left hand on the lens ring to adjust values, and right thumb changing settings. Maybe they're onto something?

I'm eager to see that in action.

This is looking good.

The rear wheel does seem to have disappeared. The top knurled wheel is the mode selection dial. I note the addition of a Q button however which is inherited from the DSLRs and works very well.

Does this have an articulating rear LCD or no?  Initially I thought it did, but now the pictures seem like it doesn't.

Anyways, my wife already wants this to replace her S110, and I think I'd enjoy this camera as well.  Hopefully will drop under $400 by Black Friday.

Maybe no flippy screen to keep cost and size down?

If you want a flippy screen, there is the Canon G7x.

For me personally, I'm really looking for a small camera. Something the size of my Canon S90.

Re: Canon G9 X - $530 - limited rear buttons

This one seems more attractive than G5X because of 1" sensor, low price and small size. By the way, does this one have touch screen and EVF?

Yes on touch(but it's a fixed screen), no on evf.

Re: Canon G9 X - $530 - limited rear buttons

In the USA at least, the G7X has dropped to $599.  The $70 difference is negligible, so I'm really curious as to which one sells better while their respective prices are at those levels.  Will people prefer the faster lens with more reach and the articulating LCD while sacrificing a bit of size/weight?  Or will smaller win out?

Re: Canon G9 X - $530 - limited rear buttons

Canon has bad marketing strategy, not try to make improvements in the zoom, focusing speed and video but introducing several similar cameras, G7X, G5X and G9X. Those cameras will fight by themselves.

Re: Canon G9 X - $530 - limited rear buttons

I disagree. They are covering the whole gamut. Who cares if you buy g7x instead of g5x, they still got your dough.

This camera looking awesome. At that price though, I think I'd go with g7x and the longer, brighter lens. Let's see what gray market is.

Re: Canon G9 X - $530 - limited rear buttons

same here damian

Goin to sell my G7 X, as it's just a tad too big to pocket, and also because I have a few other (slightly larger) cameras I can use in its place. This, other than lacking the rear dial, which I may not use as much thanks to the touch screen, is pretty much the camera I wanted to replace my S90.

The price is a bit high though, I'll wait for price drops, or grey market as well.
