G5 X looks cool. Finally a Powershot with builtin EVF. Apparantly same lens as G7 X, would have preferred a bit more reach, like G1 X.  Weather sealed?

Will probably have to wait a year or so for the likely astronomical launch price to come down to a realistic level.

Don't see the point of the G9 X though, next to the G7 X.

Re: G5X, G9X coming?

If that's genuine I am excited to see an EVF and an articulated screen on the g5x. I am less excited about it's lens. It's too short and if it's the exact same lens as the g7x it will have the same soft close-ups at wide apertures.

It will be interesting to see what they are priced at. Unless the g9x is cheap I can't see them selling many.

That G9X is smart. Bringing the size down to make it a bit more pocketable at the expense of zoom and brightness.

Perhaps can be considered the true successor to the S120 (as opposed to g7x).

Agreed, the g9x looks to be the true replacement for the s series. I haven't compared sizes yet, but I'll trade some light for a more pocketable body!

Looks like a photoshopped Nikon V3 base.

Me as well. Still getting f2 wide and significantly more versatile with the 1" sensor and 20mp.

Won't be great for portrait bokeh, but neither was the s120.

Rumored size of g9x
98 x 58 x 31mm 209g (battery?)

S120
100 x 59 x 29 mm 217g (w/battery)

You need to compare it to the correct camera. It's the same size and weight as the Canon S120, but with a larger sensor. So they really just renamed the S line and improved it's lower light/noise.. sounds good to me!

It should take whatever spot the S120 is at now, as it's the closest in size.

Yup! I see that it's 28mm equiv, which is ok for me. I strongly prefer that to the 24mm of all the recent cameras because those just feel a bit too wide. For anyone that wants brighter or wider, there's the G5X and G7X.

I'm quiet excited, because what I really wanted for my S90 was the same size, and significantly better low light / noise performance, something I didn't feel that I got when I briefly had the S120. The G7X solved only one of those problems and created another one, not being able to comfortably pocket it really takes the usefulness out imo. Anyway, this G9X solves both those problems. Now just to see how pricing is.

Re: G5X, G9X coming?

At the moment, it's all still speculation.

But often, the specs that get leaked one or two days ahead of the announcement are pretty close to being the real thing. If that's true then the G9X means that maybe there'll never be a G17. The G16 is larger than the G7X, only with a smaller sensor. That's the kind of camera that's rapidly becoming extinct. Replacing that spot in the G lineup with a smaller camera with a bigger sensor makes sense. And the leaked specs make it look like it'll be very close to the same price point as the G16. The reported zoom range is short, but the RX100 sells pretty good with a short zoom.

The G9X is an attractive looking camera.  Particularly in the silver.  I have been using an S95 for quite some time, and it's a favorite with me.  I'd like more reach than 85 mm; but it's a 20 MP sensor, so using it at 10 MP would give 120 mm.  The S95 is also 10 MP, so I'd have more reach and no real loss of quality.  I agree, 28 mm is fine.

The G9X would be a fine companion to my FZ1000 for travel, replacing my S95.  Experimenting with lower resolution, I found that at 10 MP, it gives excellent IQ, better than a good FZ200 at 560 mm.  That gives me some confidence that the G9X would also be pretty good at 10 MP.

The G9X is a mixed bag for me.  It has the built in EVF we've all been asking for, but the camera is actually larger than my G15 and not as "pocket friendly" with the EVF sticking up like that.  Also, it only goes to 100 mm, equivalent.

Now to wait for reviews and owner reports.

Replacement for G15 and S120

According to Canon Rumors

http://www.canonrumors.com/canon-powershot-g5-x-powershot-g9-x-leak/

Pretty good assumption I'd say based on specs and size

The big change is in the much larger 1" sensor

Re: G5X, G9X coming?

For quite a long while in the film era, I used several varieties or 28-105 mm zooms on my SLR's.  I found it to be a great range for most kinds of travel, and for near home as well.  I did have longer lenses available; but on many trips left them home.  I've had much the same experience with my S95 (28-105).  I can also recall trying a number of other lenses (28-85, 35-105, 35-70, etc.) and not being satisfied - mainly because I wanted more length.  So, among small camera with a 1" sensor, I know in advance that 70 mm is just not enough, 85 is marginal at best, and 100-105 is better.  At 10 MP, the G5X gets to 120 mm, and the G9X to 140 mm - the same as my G15.

I have been very pleased with my G15's IQ, so I don't see the G9X as replacing it.  However, the G5X just might be the replacement for my S95.

It all depends on how it is priced.  I actually prefer f2.0 @ 28mm.

Nope. The 5 is a G7X with EVF and the 9 is a s120 in different shell.

Yeah, right. Different body, different lens, different sensor - but it's the same camera? That's like saying that a cherry pie is actually an apple pie, only it has different fruit in it.

The problem is...

The Sony RX100 II is still kicking around. As I alluded to in another forum, that camera is very similarly spec'd to this one in terms of sensor and lens. So this camera has to be competitively priced in order to sell well (say $500) as well as offer something the RX100 II doesn't, like a touch screen.

Both have slow lenses. I don't see the point if a 9 x when there's the 7 x. Canon trying to do too much and largely ignoring mirrorless. The "baby m3"? Sounds like the Samsung s4 mini that landed with a dud.

What this symbolizes is Canon's entire new p&s line up. There will be no other p&s models. That market is dead. Prices got too low so that all that could be made was poor quality cameras with tiny sensors. Can't put much quality into a camera that costs $150 if all involved in a sale need to make profit.

For cameras with small sensors people are satisfied with their smart phone.

A very pocketable camera with a 1" sensor, that will be more versatile than the S120 due to the much bigger sensor? I'm there. This was a very smart move by Canon, now 2x in a row (g3x/g9x) hitting in areas that really aren't covered so well. Many people complaining "where's the S120 successor? And oh no, look at the g7x blurry corners", here it is and if it does things right (eg, solid lens and performance), it should be a nice step up.
