Canon 50mm STM

Being a semi pro tog, I was a bit apprehensive over this lens at first but having read other reviews, I decided to put one through its paces. Now I know it'll never beat L quality but after using it continually over the past few days on my 1DS MkIII, I was pleasantly surprised as to how sharp it actually is - as good as but not better than my 24-105L as similar settings. At F/8 it is equally as sharp as the 24-105 and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to anyone and a plus is the metal mount not the cheap plastic one on the MkII this lens replaces.

Maybe you have a very good copy of the 24-105. In my experience the 50STM kicks the crap out of the 24-105 at any aperture from F4 on down.

As it should since it's a prime, though kicking crap may be a bit strong.

I do have a very sharp version of the 24-105, but yes the 50 is sharper.

I've never had a problem with my 24-105 with sharpness even at F4. The only problem I have is slight vignetting at F4 which is easily corrected in LR. I was once told that at F4, it's sweet, at F8, it'll cut you in half and I can see why, F8 is my particular sweet spot. Regards the 50mm, cracking lens but it had to go as I prefer zooms and just couldn't get on with it, next purchase is going to be 28-300L then 17-40L
