All shots are either with the 12-40mm Pro or 40-150mm pro. Please only constructive critiques and observations, not looking for anything hate-mongering. (**note I have a few generic photos of my family in here just for personal reasons. I think it'll become clear which ones I'm striving for more photographic expression)

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly.  Love some, some OK and some I would put in the trash bin.  Difficult to apply a full critique to the whole album.

Agree with Trevor. Some I really like. Keep shooting and have fun. It's not the gear, it's the eye.

You have a good eye and you use focus and isolation well.

On a number of the images, my preference would be to do more post processing and/or exposure bracketing.  Sometimes the light didn't fit the picture you had in your mind.

At least that's how it seems to me.

Really liked some of them!

thanks

No problem Andrew. I am afraid of bracketing because they often seem unrealistic in color, but I will start experimenting more. I tend not to post process hardly at all, but I'm definitely willing to do some on any of the shots you point out for me. I have lightroom but only use it for minor touch ups. I guess Im in the camp where PS takes away from what Im trying to do.

Too many, too diverse and too variable to really come to any conclusion. Some are interesting, others look like random snapshots.

I think if you want helpful criticism, it is better to be more selective and maybe present shots on a single theme (you can do that as many times as you like).

Re: What do you all think of some of the photos I've taken with my OMD-EM1?

There's two photos there that I like very much. Both are b&w; one is of the little girl peering over the wooden rail, and the other is of the couple under the huge tree. I do think the second is slightly oversharpened however, especially noticeable as slight halos around the people. I think a little selective unsharpening would help a bit.

Keep 'em coming; a lot of us love to look at each others work.:-D

Thank you for the kind words. I didnt realize a few photos of just misc happenings slipped into the stream. Im not quite at the level yet where I can pull 20+ photos from an event to tell a story, but these are most of my favorite shots from the past year.
My largest regret is not taking more down in Brazil (was terrified Id get robbed )

Shadows

The shadows in most images are all black, showing no detail. They'd look better i.m.o. if you could avoid that. Clogged shadows sometimes result from editing the images on a laptop with a mediocre screen (laptop screens often have a gamma error that makes shadows look brighter than they are).

Another suggestion would be to try and see the world (through your viewfinder) in terms of lines and geometrical shapes (squares, rectangles, circles, etc) to aid in finding a more balanced composition.

You're doing fine, better than I can do.  I'm OK at my specialities but general photography like this requires a good eye which you have got.

Some thoughts:

Little girl with umbrella is lost, picture doesn't work.  Fisherman in river, very similar but works.

Bubble picture could be good but it isn't.  Not much you could do it's  random event but you could have taken a 100 shots, one would have been excellent

I really like the two guys and the table

Stream around shrubs is very bland

Lady I front of Cabin nice portrait

Sunsets can be boring but you have a couple of nice ones here

Little boy with arm, very easy improvement crop arm

You seem to be obsessed with people from the back, nothing wrong with that but sometimes the shots don't work very well.  I like the man with the hat in front of the surf.

Re: What do you all think of some of the photos I've taken with my OMD-EM1?

I agree with the picture of the girl being lost as I only had my 12-40mm lens at the time and missed a ample opportunity. The river pictures were put up there for nostalgic reasons.
I dont think im obsessed with photos from the back, but I grew up with a Dad who always did framed American Gothic style portraits, so I've been more intrigued by the candidness and different angles.
I do need to learn how to use lightroom better to correct my images. I know a few of them could easily improve as you mentioned with about 5-10 minutes of work.
Thanks for the C&C though mate!

Re: What do you all think of some of the photos I've taken with my OMD-EM1?

I loved the images you captured that I call "abstracts" when you show lines, shapes, and forms working together. You should capture more images like these as I think you have a good eye for this.

Thank you. I have been expanding into this territory more recently and really enjoy the geometric takes also. Maybe its my math degree background haha

I'm really appreciating the kind words and thoughtful critiques. I've also found it interesting and indicative of the subjective nature of art which stands out for most people. I have had some say my B&W work is the best, some compliment on my portraits, some on my abstracts. Interesting stuff...
I think I have been focusing most on isolation, geometry, and moments, but need to improve my technical bonifides a bit and bump up my knowledge of post processing.
I agree that some of the craggy rocks could look better if I brought out the subtle definition in them. Good thing these are all on RAW on my computer and I can touch them later on.
A few photos admittedly were not artistic "achievements" by any means but hold nostalgia value or value for a few people I shared with in private.

A few good ones...

And good exposure in general. Your general weakness IMO is composition. If you wish to improve, I'd suggest reading a good book on composition principles. The vast majority of images shown at the link suffer from one compositional issue or another, that could have easily been corrected. Many centered subjects, many accidental cropped subjects, many distracting elements that a slight move of your framing would have eliminated. Learn about balance of masses, color contrasts and golden triangle, study images from the pros and ask yourself what make them work so well. Keep in mind the basic principles when you shoot, and they'll soon become second nature and you won't even have to think about it.

Re: A few good ones...

hmmm to each their own. I tend to like to include such 'extraneous' detail like limbs to frame my shot and dont find them distracting but more in line with photojournalism.
I dont see the center issue in hardly any of the photos. If I drew a straight line down any given photo in the album most if not 90% would be asymmetrical.
Still I acknowledge I have lots to learn, but Im going to start diving into exposure bracketing first.
