What do you think?

I mentioned this before(see my earlier post) and I'll mention again - a GM1 + either a 12-32 or a 14mmf2.5 will provide you a good m43 system with fairly recent and very decent technology.  A system you can grow with.  GF5 is one generation older sensor-wise.

I won't even consider the LX7 if given a GM1 as an option.  Like any other system, you will find some annoyances which you'll adapt to like we all do.

My vote is still on GM1.  Lens-wise, since I shoot primarily with prime's, a 14mmf2.5 or 17mmf2.8 or both will be a good starter.  I have all 3 so I can vouch for them

If you are looking for a compact... Nikon P7800

I think its not a bad idea to have a look at the 1/1.7 or 2/3 sensors like the LF1 or XQ1. It certainly is more affordable vs the GM1...

I really like Nikon P7800 as my "pocketable" compact camera. It is not a par for speed with my DSLRs but it is great when I travelling and photography isn´t my target but can occurs occasionally.

  • 1/1.7" sensor
  • Great 28-200 (equiv at FF) lens
  • Raw capable
  • Very good JPEG engine
  • EVF
  • Completely movable rear LCD
  • Three user configurable setup banks direct from dial: U1, U2, U3 besides PASM
  • Very robust
  • Embedded flash that also can fire remote flashes (CLS system)
  • Very good VR
  • External mic input

Re: Narrowed down my choices to..

Just had the change to hold an RX100 2 and found it quite nice and small! I can find the RX100-1 for about 250€ which I consider quite high for it, or not?

Re: Narrowed down my choices to..

So do you think it's worth it even if it is the 1st generation? Especially compared to the other candidates, LX7, GM1, GF7?

Re: The Lumix LX7 is an extraordinary camera

I agree Yannis should be looking for a m4/3's camera.

But to say the LX7  ain't nothin in anything but Perfect Light is total Trash from a Clueless Person.

Actually, the LX7 is not all that. I had one or two and wasn't impressed at all with the IQ. The Pentax MX-1 is much better, all around.

Re: Any opinion about Olympus XZ-2 ? (nt)

You might ask for opinions on the XZ-2 over at the Olympus compact forum, where the XZ/Stylus/TG/SH users hang out.

I didn't read a lot of the replies, but in terms of the original question, the E-PM1 is the older camera than the E-PM2. It has the older 12MP sensor, while the E-PM2 uses the 16MP sensor that was first used with the E-M5. The 16MP sensor is perhaps 1 f/stop better at low light.

I never used the E-PM1, but I recall it was more stripped down than then E-PM2 is in terms of having programmable buttons. For a basic camera, it may not matter as much. I do have the E-PM2, and it is a fun camera, but other cameras have replaced it (E-M5, Stylus-1) and I don't bring it out as much these days.

Many people don't like these tests because they are all shot at f5.6, but that's the aperture I shoot most and the tests were for me. When I shoot wide aperture, sharpness, especially corner sharpness isn't my main concern.

Best!

PS Enjoy your new 14! Hope you got it for a good price. I got mine for $140 from Korea. If 14 was one of my preferred FL's I'm sure I would like it more and forgive its weaknesses more!

Thanks for your reply. Much obliged. I do actually like the 28mm, albeit, I would probably like 24mm (Oly 12mm) even more. Still, I would also like the small size of the 14mm. Many times I would bring my 14-45mm just for the 14mm. The 14mm would drastically save space.

As for your tests, that is odd. I have always thought the 14mm was optically better than the Oly 17mm 2.8. And the tests I have read also seems to say that as well. Course it could be sample variatoin. Then again, the differences in your photos are minute and wouldn't notice unless you are to pixel peek or do some drastic cropping so I guess I wouldn't mind too much (specially since i have seen many awesome shots with the 17mm 2.8).

Any how, thanks again for the tests. Very much appreciated And yes, if you like the 17mm FL more and the 17mm also seems to be optically better, I would surely pick the 17mm over the 14mm. Although, personally, I think I like both FL's equally

Thanks! I've compared my sample with two friends who also own the lens and they are all about the same. Corners aren't completely biting sharp, but are really acceptable. One thing I should note, the 14 is a really nicely designed tiny lens! Fast focusing and very compact! Feels nicer on the camera than the still nice little 17/2.8. I think the confusion regarding how good the 14 is comes from people mostly looking at wide open performance when comparing the two lenses. I've never shot the 14 wide open, but with respect to the 17, when I've shot it wide open, the type of shots I take lose DOF in the corners before any lack of sharpness has been seen.

I had really hoped that a dirt cheap and respectable 25mm f2.8 pancake lens would have been offered because I like shooting these little pancakes, even if not providing the pinnacle of performance.

Enjoy all the lenses you buy and have fun shooting!
