Excellent for reportage and portraits on a crop sensor - it does flare

Since I bought mine second hand, I'm enjoying a lot to use it. f/1.4 on a 35mm lens is providing an extremely shallow depth of field (often too shallow) and great low light capabilities. Unfortunately, it flares when a direct light (like the moon) is close to the composition frame, both in or out of the frame, reducing a bit this advantage for night landscapes.

It deserves for sure a place into Canon's 'oly trinity you'd plan to have, especially if you want to move (or are already FF. Nevertheless, I have to admit that for shooting my 17 months old daughter (she's by far my preferred subject) the extra cost compared to the EF 28mm f/1.8 USM is not necessarily justified, especially if you plan to buy a new one. I also like a bit mor the FOV of the 28mm on my crop body...but this is just my opinion!

Now that the mkII version has been released, the used ones should hopefully become more affordable... everything's relative, isn't it?

Here is a rather extreme example, I included the direct street light in the frame on purpose. The flare is well controlled.

that is what i thought! this is great sample to minimize the justification to upgrade if one already has the V1, such as myself by the way, this is a nice shot, J A C S, i like the color saturation, framing, and exposure!

That's a very nice shot, bravo!

I'm not as good photog as you are but this is what I got with mine last summer... Tried with several exposures but flare didn't disappeared until sea was visible.

Maybe my copy is somehow defective?

Cheers.

Shooting wide open into that much glare, this appears to be a better than acceptable result. Maybe the newer lens' coatings would handle the extreme contrast/lighting a bit better, but judging from this image I wouldn't think your lens was defective at all.

Thanks man for your comment. Next time I'll try with a smaller aperture... and learn from this experience and your teaching.

Cheers.
