Canon EF-S 24mm: Brilliantly high image quality affordable APS-C lens
5

I was looking for a small, high quality, modern (vs legacy), 20 - 30mm (APS-C), auto-focus prime lens for my Sony A5100. Despite I am a (Sony) mirrorless fanboy, I decided to pick a Canon EOS lens. I have a nice collection of Canon FD lenses, including the FD24mm/f1.4L, but I've always wanted to own a Canon EOS lens, too. I ordered a Viltrox EF-NEX (electronic) adapter and I visited a local shop and I tried the EF-S 24mm (adapted) on my A5100. The adapter worked fine, but I immediately found that the AF is very slow, very accurate/precise, though. I was a bit hesitant but eventually I bought the lens.

The EFS 24mm is a perfect fit on a small mirrorless camera.

Another shocking experience was the lag in the manual focus-by-wire. It's really frustrating at first, it took me a some time to learn. Huh, focus-by-wire is really bad on Sony lenses, too. Now I know that manual focusing Canon's STM lenses is not fun, either. Eventually, the brilliant focus peaking with touch-to-magnify of the A5100 made MF quite doable/applicable.

After the shocking experiences (very slow AF on the Voltrox adapter, and laggy focus-by-wire) came the good news: the image quality on the 24M Sony A5100 was exceptional. So sharp that I immediately fell in love with this lens. I have the lens on my A5100 since then.

The exceptional dynamic range of the A5100's state of the art APS-C sensor with the brilliantly sharp (still affordable) Canon EFS 24mm produces terrific images.

I love so much the EFS 24mm, that I started thinking of buying a Canon APS-C camera just for this lens in order to get normal speed AF. Maybe Canon's EOS-M4 (if ever made) could be such a body; I am not in a rush.

The Canon EFS 24mm is capable to deliver excellent image to the 24M high-quality sensor of Sony A5100

I use my Sony A5100 + EFS24mm combo these days as slow AF and tricky-to-MF fixed-lens camera.

I tried the EFS 24mm on my daughter's full-frame Sony A7, too. Zoom in to 100% to see/pixel peep how sharp the image is.

As far as I know EFS lenses cannot be used on Canon full-frame cameras, but they can be used on Sony FF bodies.

Maybe next time I'll buy a 40mm or 50mm STM. I expect that adapter makers will improve the AF, too. If not, I may buy a (mirrorless) Canon body in the future when they will have 4K video.

I gave 4.5 stars because of the laggy focus-by-wire, which, of course, is not an issue for AF-only photographers.

You should give the M22/2 a try. Just as good optically, and a stop faster.

Good stuff Miki,

I highly recommend the 40 2.8 STM (don't let your daughter near it or she will have that too for the A7).

The other thing is see if you can try the lens on M4/3.

There are fast AF adapters available (AF-S at least) from Kipon and Metabones......I have the Kipon and the 40 2.8 is really nice on that with pretty much native AF speed.

I still love the lens on my A7s/A7 with slower AF too.

Have you tried face detect AF?     It works great with the 40 2.8 STM on both my Sony's and my M4/3 GX7.

Neil, I have the EF 40/2.8 and the EFS 55-250 f/4-5.6 IS lens. I was planning to adapt these, either to my NEX-7/ NEX-5R,  or my E-M10, and need to keep the price of the adapter at a reasonable level.  I realize that the 40/2.8 is an STM lens, causing some difficulties perhaps. I don't mind slow AF.

Steve

On the NEX they will be slow to AF with any of the many available adapters (maybe the new DEO Saker Falcon AFC adapter MIGHT be an exception).

With either the Kipon or Metabones, depending on the camera/lens combination AF may well not be slow....it is quite fast with the Kipon and my GX7.......I have had plenty of native camera/ lens combinations that have been slower to focus anyway.

The Kipon adapter is a lot cheaper than the Metabones and the Kipon is not a focal reducer while the metabones AF for M4/3 all are (I think).

I find the AF ok for my A7s/A7 .....fast enough for people shots as long as they are not moving their feet....40 2.8 STM and 135 f2 L are the two AF lenses I use most.

With the Kipon adapter on the GX7 and 40 2.8, I can be walking towards someone walking towards me and no problems shooting them (and can do so with touch AF and touch shutter).

Stabilized for stills on the GX7 as well (not video though).

The Kipon adapter introduced bad distortion with many lenses (40 2.8 in particular) as sold but version 2.5 firmware has fixed that and made it MUCH better with many lenses.

Even my ancient 100-300 5.6 L is fast enough to use for AF rather than manual focus as it was without the firmware upgrade and on the Sony's.

Thanks, that seems congruent with Tom Caldwell's findings, I believe.

So I guess I'll be getting the Kipon adapter and using my M43 (E-M10). Still not cheap, but sounds worthwhile.

Another advantage using the Olympus is the built-in IBIS. The disadvantage may be a drop in resolution. And I don't need the longer reach.

Neil, I found this.

This reviewer had bad luck with the Kipon adapter on his Oly E-M1.

Steve, that was before Firmware updates it looks like.

I suspect it would be a lot better with the current (2.5) firmware......though I can not say for sure.

This was with the 135 f2 L and GX7 and Kipon yesterday......too long for most pub gigs as I was actually almost at the door for some shots.

Didn't give the 40 2.8 much of a go yesterday.

Ok Neil.

I accept that the Kipon Adapter works great on the GX7, but still have no verification of it on the Olympus, particularly the E-M10.

Steve, I agree and that is why I recommend caution with an Oly camera as yet.

Just be sure that when looking at reviews that it has the current firmware as it really does make huge difference with many lenses for me ....two of my lenses that were manual focus only pretty much before ar now usable and the two favourites (40 and 135) are much better.

I don't have an Oly camera (I gave my E-PL2 to relatives).

No distortion now with the 40 especially for instance.

Thx Neil, well we know the Metabones works, but too pricey. I'll continue to wait...

Canon EF-S 24mm vs Sony SEL 10-18mm/f4

Good stuff Miki,

Thank you, Neil

Here is a comparison of the parformance of the EF-S 24mm vs the brilliant Sony 10-18mm

Cano EF-S 24mm on Sony A5100 (pixel peep at 1:1)

Same location with the SEL 10-18mm (remember to pixelpeep at 1:1)

I highly recommend the 40 2.8 STM (don't let your daughter near it or she will have that too for the A7).

Great idea, this should be my next EOS lens, definitely.

The other thing is see if you can try the lens on M4/3. There are fast AF adapters available (AF-S at least) from Kipon and Metabones......I have the Kipon and the 40 2.8 is really nice on that with pretty much native AF speed.

Very interesting, I am seriously thinking of buying a Panasonic GX8, I simply love its features: high resolution fast tilting EVF, 4K video, adaptability, excellent touch screen (touch-pad focus point selection), no-humps soap-box (rangefinder) shape, exposure compensation dial.

I still love the lens on my A7s/A7 with slower AF too.

I loved my A7, but after using the touch-screen on my Sony A5100, I am not really willing to buy a non-touch screen camera any more, however great it would be anyway.

Have you tried face detect AF? It works great with the 40 2.8 STM on both my Sony's and my M4/3 GX7.

I've seen that the camera detects faces with the EF-S 24mm, too, but I don't know how does it work actiually on my A5100 with AF-S.

I wanna see that Sony camera mounted on one of them big primes like 500/600 F4 IS or 400 2.8 IS.  LOL

Canon EF-S 24mm vs Sony 10-18mm and 16-50mm
1

Here are couple additional test images all at f5.6

Canon EF-S 24mm additional test shots. This lens is much more affordable then the Sony 24mm.

Sony 1650 reference shot, unfortunately I should have set it at 24mm, damn.

Another reference image taken with Sony 10-18mm

My conclusion is that the EF-S 24mm is an excellent lens on Sony cameras, too. I am still expecting that Canon is coming out with its 1st 4K camera in the EOS or EOS-M line before the end of the year.

Image below taken with the 24mm STM on an old Canon 500D/T1i body just over a month ago.

I love this lens! - very good optically, very small and light, and cheap-enough that I don't feel I have to baby it.

Great photo with this lens even without the post-process detail boost (resulting in noise or artifacting). Will definitely get me a copy. Thanks.

Here is the 100-400L on the A5100, it's a lovely and really great combo.

An example photo taken with this 100-400L + A5100 combo.

I might get that for travel. I wonder if my 10-18, 24 STM and a 40 STM would be GREAT for the big upcoming Italy trip.

When I take my T1i out for exercise, I only use those 2 lenses. The camera + lens fits in a very small pouch, and the other lens fits in the front pocket of the pouch.

Re: Canon EF-S 24mm: Brilliantly high image quality affordable APS-C lens

Miki Nemeth wrote:

I love so much the EFS 24mm, that I started thinking of buying a Canon APS-C camera just for this lens in order to get normal speed AF. Maybe Canon's EOS-M4 (if ever made) could be such a body; I am not in a rush.

I use my Sony A5100 + EFS24mm combo these days as slow AF and tricky-to-MF fixed-lens camera.

Am I the only one amused that the adapter is about the same size as the lens?  Maybe the 24mm's "hood" would've visually balanced things.
