Should I Get a New Cam

Hi,

It's a very general question, any input would be appreciated:

I have a Canon G9 which is still working nicely, and used only on trips, about 3-4 times a year. Day to day it's my phone (currently Xperia z3).

I feel envy with new cams' sensor size, 24-28mm equiv. focal lenth and wider aperture, but can't justify investing in something new for only a few times a year. If I'd use more often, then my candidates would be Canong G7x (441$ here) or Lumix LX100 (+200$).

Keep in mind, i'm a casual user who likes an advanced experience, using manual modes often.

So...should I upgrade? do you think a new generation camera will give better results?

my next trip will be in December to Barcelona, which should be great for street and architecture shots.

Thanks,

O.

NO NO NO.  If you are happy with your day-to-day shots cam than your fine G9 is already a major overkill.

do you think a new generation camera will give better results?

sure it will, but will you be REALLY happy with just a better picture? If that was the case than you prob. used your G9 far more often.

yeahhh fine architecture there... Have fun on your trip and enjoy your G9.

regards Peter

Thanks,

O.

Completely agree with Speedy... use your G9 on your 3/4 times a year and your phone for the rest...

Great phone! in good light at least

Woah, look these are great camera's but they're meant to be used. I sure wouldn't be able to justify an investment in this case either.

Maybe an older second hand Rx100 or GM-1 that may be possibility given that you can get one cheap. But if not keep using what you have!

Yeah these camera's do work great in that environment. I would say the Panasonic would be better given that the Canon isn't that great at 24mm equiv. The G7x does a great job from 35-40mm to max zoom though.

But then again. it's just a few days in a limited timeframe.

Re: Should I Get a New Cam

Look if you want a newer camera, and have the funds, do it. Always fun to use a new featured camera, even if it's only 3-4 times a year. If the funds are not there then the G9 is great and I agree with the rest.

Re: Should I Get a New Cam

Thanks everyone!

My brain says keep using what you have, my heart says go get a new camera...It's always fun to have a new gadget, no?

I guess I can wait for another cycle of releases (canon G7X II? Fuji X40 with a bigger sensor?)

Best,

Keep what you have. Use the money you would have wasted on unnecessary gear to take a class or a trip. Knowledge and good memories are never obsolete.

You're welcome.

Yes yes yes but hang on a bit and wait for the new G17, then you can review it and let me know how good it is.

But seriously you could upgrade very cheaply by buying a G12, full manual mechanical functionality and now very cheap being 3 models back. I purchased a new G12 last year to replace my G3 (that camera went my Ex wifes way on  divorce). The later G15 and G16 really didnt do it for me Canon lost a little of the ethos of the G range (but not too much) whereas the G12 had it all.

The G7X and the G3X have the larger sensor but once again not that esoteric design and function that the earlier G's possess, I am hopeful, wish full and hanging out for a G17 that is the direct descendant of the G12.

Re: Should I Get a New Cam

There's an illogical crave for new gear, i'm almost disappointed the G9 is still working. Die already! so I can maybe justify a new one.
